| Etiquette & English Gentleman | Take this as a warning: given how widely available these things are, thereÂ’s a strong possibility that your great aunt Mabel (who canÂ’t understand the difference between a heavily modded PC and an iMac) will buy you one for Christmas. This review will let you decide whether to use it, or try to sell it to some poor sap on eBay as “new & unused†in the new year. Knowledge is power, and hopefully youÂ’ll also be able to hide your disappointment & so avoid being written out of her will. Cost: approx. 7GBP / 10USD Specs: requires 2 AA batteries Manufacturer: not known, but made in Taiwan Part #: TC-335T I got this item last week when one of those odd “free shipping above x amount†scenarios presented itself, when you can either pay shipping, or get one item extra for virtually free. First impressions upon getting it out of the box are that it sucks. “ItÂ’s a vacuum cleaner!†I hear you say “itÂ’s supposed to suck!Ââ€. Well yes, but not this way. For a start, it doesnÂ’t have any batteries supplied with it, which necessitated raiding my old VCR remote in order to test it Â… and loading the required two AA size cells reveals just how cheap & nasty this item is. So, on with a bit of testingÂ… Test one: keyboard cleaning: Carefully vacuuming around the keys picked up at most 5 percent of the usual detritus, using the more conventional method of turning the Kb over & banging it was far more effective. Not good so far. Test two: cleaning the front bezel on a Chieftec case: A slightly more encouraging result this time, the bezel looked slightly cleaner, and there was certainly some dust collected in the trap. However, it quickly became apparent that the vacuum is not strong enough to pick dust up on its own – you have to use one of the brush attachments to get the dust airborne first. I also had something of a sneezing fit, so apparently _breathing_ has more of a vacuum effect. Test three: cleaning my monitor top: ThereÂ’s no denying that it picked up an impressive amount of dust Â… but then, there was plenty to pick up! The standard of finish was very poor however, and I had to wipe down with a cloth afterwards. Seeing that dust was blowing out from where the trap seals against the body, and thinking that the filter might be blocked, I emptied the trap, and suction was restored to its former (inadequate) state. Test four: cleaning the interior: Oh boy, did my case need it. It must be at least 6 months since I last opened it for cleaning Â… possibly even a year. Unfortunately, it looked better _before_ than after – at least the dust formations were natural, now it just looks like I donÂ’t care enough to do a proper job. Conclusion: All in all, thoroughly disappointing, even for the couple of quid it cost me. Cons: Filter blocks quickly Feeble sucking power Indifferent quality More likely to spread dust around than pick it up. Pros: Comes in four fruity flavours to match your i-Mac Has modding potential: USB-powered, LED-lit coffee stirrer anyone? ![]() | |
