Default Project: Opteron Negative 146

Now some of you might be asking yourself why it says negative in-between Opteron and 146. As most of you know I am an overclocker with the need for speed. I have done high end air cooling and water cooling. Recently many people have been successful here reaching 3ghz. For me this was an amazing feat to overcome. Now it is time to move on to colder things for those extreme overclocks. Yes thatÂ’s right I will be cooling my Opteron with dry ice.

I along with the help from two fellow pimps alpha754293 and PhLaKz'R will be making a dry ice container to cool my cpu to some frigid temps. Some of you have seen phase change units and may ask why not use one of those. The reason I decided on a dry ice container rather than phase change is because of cost, power consumption, and cooling ability. Dry Ice can get the cpu colder than most single stage phase change units for a fraction of the price of a phase. Also if at a later date I decided I need to get it colder I could use LN2 (Liquid Nitrogen) which is -192C. That is colder than any cascade I have seen to date. I expect temps to be some where in the -40C to -60C range.

The actual container will be machined out of one solid piece of aluminum. I chose aluminum because it is cheaper and will cool almost as efficiently as copper will. It will start as solid round bar 2 ¾ inches in diameter and 12 inches long. It will end up being machined it will be down to 2 ½ inches in diameter and 7 inches long.

Here is a picture of what the unit looks like after alpha754293 put it into cad for me.

Here are two shots of the drawings that alpha helped with. **The specs have been removed from the drawing and they are not to scale**

Currently I am still working on designing the rest of the mounting and figuring out all of the insulation for it. I got the final OK from PhLaKzÂ’r and machining will hopefully start late next week. After the machining process I will be lapping the bottom to 2000 grit.

Any questions or comments are welcome. Keep an eye on this work log pictures of the actual unit will be up within the next few weeks.

I would really like to thank alpha754293 and PhLaKzÂ’r for all their generous help. Without them this wouldnÂ’t be possible. +Rep to both of you.

I still think you're absolutely nuts, but damn gotta give you some respect for even giving this a shot!

So pretty much you're just gonna load that tube full of some solid CO2? I can't wait to see the pics/vid of that thing, with gas pouring out of the top.

One problem I might be worried about would be water vapor freezing around the CO2 pellets. You'd have a layer of ice between the HS and the ultra-cold pellet that would hurt your cooling ability.

I am going to try and get pellets of Dry Ice. The tube will have a special mixture at the bottom that will be cooled by the dry ice. As far as water vapor freezing im not very worried about that, It shouldnt be a problem.

DAAAAAMN! that's going to be amazing once you get it up and running! Can't wait to see how high you get your system up to with it!

If you want to make some heads turn, see if you can get that suckah up to 3.5GHz. That would be uber-pimp.

Most likely if I dont get the dreaded cold bug it will hit 3.5 or so. I cant wait to get this bad boy hooked up to my DFI.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to work with you. Had I known that that's what you were planning on doing, that would have been sweet!

Still somewhat p'd off that it took me so much longer than I had expected for something like that. Should have been able to do it in like HALF the time. grrrr......

Default Small Update: 12/3/05

Well I received a new toy today. It is a Fluke 52 digital thermometer with dual input. It is a little old but it still works and that is all that matters. I also got the design for the mounting bracket done. I just need to double check the measurements. Also the solid aluminum chunk was ordered and shipped out to Phlak. Thanks to Digitalworld for the recommendations on the thermometer. I included some pics of the thermometer as well as a shot of my desk here at school.

No it will not be going in a case. Sorry I should have specified this is just for ****s and giggles to see how fast I can get my processor and be able to bench with it. It isnt a 24/7 method of cooling.

I am not sure what to say. I guess I pray you don't freeze any parts to the point where it dies, if thats even possible.

Looking forward to seeing the numbers. Maybe something will notice you and sponsor you for overclocking "their" parts kind of deal. I guess we can all dream right?

It happens with N2, not sure about CO2, though.

Yea I dont think it should freeze any parts. The only problem I am worried about is the cold bug problem that AMDs are known for on socket 939. Cold bug basically means that the CPU gets so cold that the memory controller doesnt function properly and most of the time wont allow you to run your memory above 250FSB. That is the first step to cold bug the next thing that happens is the system just will not boot if it gets to cold. I would love to get sponsored maybe get one of those FX57s(they have a lower cold bug that opterons) on a DFI nF4 SLI Expert board with two 512mb 7800GTXs. I should keep on dreaming lol.

would keeping the system pegged at 100% (i.e. F@H or something else similar to that) help to stabilize the system at low temperatures? Probably up to a certain point huh?

Hopefully that nothing dies in the process of trying. *knock on wood*

Yes in order to help things F@H will be set to load on startup. There is also something else that will be done known as the "Ricky Tweak" when I bench 3dmark01. This tweak makes the processor run a little hotter and uses the processor more effeciently in 3dmark01. Yea I hope I dont break anything either.
