Default Project - VVCC LAN ****COMPLETED****

Well it's that time again. I'm bored of my current cases so another shall be created. This time I'm going for a them computer for the Local LAN that I run www.vvcclan.com. Should have it done hopefully by the next LAN (July 23rd), and at worst by 29th, which is the day before the Newegg Lanfest. Well here is what I have so far. The case is a cheiftec, but it's actually a whole bunch of case parts from the three gutted cases I had lying in the garage. But hey, it beats buying a new case . Hopefully it turns out nice.

Well as any real modder would know that the stock fan holders are just ugly so that was the first thing I tackled. I cut out the back following the blue line. Then I thought it would be really cool to have a removable fan tray. This way with four screws the back would pop off holding the fan for easy removal, cleaning, etc... So a nice 1/4 inch piece of 6061 aluminum was the choice (pretty much all I had in the scrap pile too). Once I cut it out, I finished it off with a good mirror polish.

@ Subdismal, If I told you everything I was going to do it wouldn't be any fun for you guys to guess.

EDIT:

The window in the first post pictures is done except it needs a little clean up on some of the edges but that is the shape.

Damn! That's actually a smooth idea you had with removing the standard fan holders, and even more of a slick idea to make the fan holders into a removable tray!

Well here it is mounted. Fit like a glove (good thing since it took a long time to make). Also the fan is just for testing, those won't be the fans going into it. Also my grubby fingers have been all over it, so I need to repolish and clear the piece.

I hate to seem all over this thread, but since there's not a lot of activity currently, and I'm bored, I'll be around.

How thick is that aluminum you used? It looks pretty big to me. The size isn't really a factor, but since it would be somewhat difficult (I'd assume) to shave down the aluminum to a smaller width, what about bevelling the edges down a little bit, instead of making it a sudden drop-off? I think it would fit more together with the frame if it had a rolled lip instead of a straight drop. Just a friendly suggestion.

I did think about it, But I like how it looks. There will be a lot of machined aluminum and once the chassis is painted it should look good. The main reason I like the bulk (1/4 inch thick) is that if I stealthed it many people would not notice that it is a removable object, and I want them to notice. I guess I like beefy overkill type of looking things too.

Well, I guess you having the bulk for a show-off factor, and letting people know it's removable is yet another slick idea. Smooth moddin'.

This going to follow any sort of theme? Can you reveal this information yet, or is it still government sealed and top secret?

It's going to be green, black, aluminum, and hints of red for spice. That's pretty much the theme.

Well I started out this morning by cutting the top panel. Two 120mm fans are going in and a new set of handles since this case will be moved a lot. I still need to drill the fan screw holes. The edges are a little rough but that's fine since trim be covering them, , I did sand them down (the pick show them straight from the dremel) but not smooth enough to just be painted over.

Here is the top with with fan screws drilled. Also there will be some MNPCTECH fan grommets and trim (should help reduce noise and rattle from the 120mm fans). I have plenty of grommets but not enough trim so i have to order more but the trim in the pic will show you how it will look.
