![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Update #4 (6/13/05) Ok, so I've given up getting a belt sander. I'll work on sanding at night when it isn't unbearably hot and get it done already. I've been secretyly working on painting the top and front, since the sides still need some pretty heavy sanding. I got all my parts from AC Ryan today and boy oh boy! I can't believe I actually got all this from AC Ryan! Unfortunately a yellow UV paint bottle broke in transit, but it scratches off the stuff it got on. All this, and I got a 80GB hard drive I bought from Cpt.Planet today. I started sleeving my PSU, and some other cables, but the damn heatshrink takes too long to shrink with a hairdryer, so I'll go out and get a lighter for this. No pictures of my sleeved PSU, because the heatshrink hasn't been shrunk, thus it looks like crap in my current PC.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Update #5 (6/15/05) Since I now have 95% of the stuff required, I have no reason to slack off. I went outside to cut the plexi today, and got the outside curve of the window cut, but didn't do the inside one or the top window as my rotary tool was getting hot. I used the slowest speed to not melt the plexi but it took forever. I then spent another hour and a half sanding the side panels. I threw a coat of primer on the side panels to see where I still have to sand the "bumps" down. The non window side is pretty much ready for the blue paint, but the window side has another hour or two of sanding left. The front fascia and the top panel were primer and given two or three coats of paint all last week. I will post some pics tomorrow of them. They just need some fine sanding, clear coat and polish. Speaking of polish, can anyone suggest a polish that I can do by hand? I don't have access to a buffer/polisher. After using my trusty rotary tool to make mounting holes for the front fan, I installed the front and rear fans. I was planning on just threading power connectors through the holes in the motherboard tray, but I realized they were too small. I used my rotary tool to cut out the space between two sets of holes, one for the rear fans, and the other for the video card power lead. This really should help tidy up those wires.

| Eleven-Bravo Sitrep Writer | Just curious, but have you test-fired that front UV fan yet? Not that it wouldn't work, but to see if it rattles, what with being screwed in on the bottom only? Just IMO, I would look for a piece of sheet alum or steel (whichever is the same as the case chassis), and use it as a top crossbar stabilizer mount of sorts... If needed, you could perhaps use some window insulation (the stuff that comes in like 1/4" thich, 1/2" wide strips) to act as a shock absorber/sound dampener around the edges of the fan, where they meet with the chassis... As for whatever got UV yellow all over it, isn't that stuff water-soluble? You might be able to get it all cleaned up with just some water and a sponge. If not all the way clean, at least most of the way... Just some ideas, you know the deal

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Actually Grandpa, I have the fan on there pretty tight, and I will be using some cables ties to attach to top mounting holes to the chasis. I'm actually planning on getting some door/window insulation for all the fans later this week. The paint only got on the outer packaging of the items so it's no big deal really.

It's a 4-step process to get a really nice glossy finish. First, you wet-sand with grits 400, 600, 800, and 1000 (and I finish off with 1500). This gives your clearcoats a uniform, hazy, milky look; don't be scared, this is what you want. You DON'T want to wet-sand down to the color coats, as this will mess up any kind of metallic finish. You just want to haze the clearcoat layers. For this reason, I spray many coats of clear. Second, when dry, you use rubbing compound (3M is what many recommend, but I used Turtle Wax rubbing compound with great results too). Third, get some polishing compound (I used Turtle Wax Scratch & Swirl remover/polish) and give it the same treatment as you did with the rubbing compound. Fourth, and this step you want to wait at least a week after you finish your last clearcoat to begin, get your favorite wax and apply it. This should get you results at least as good as my Pisces project. Good luck, it's a lot of hard work but if you don't get lazy and skip steps or rush it, it will be well worth the effort. EDIT: I used soft, well-worn terry-cloth rags for the rubbing and polishing; moisten the rag before you apply the rubbing compound. The polish and wax use a dry rag.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Update #6 (6/16/05) I spent 2 and half hours last night watching TV and staring at my four UV cold cathodes, trying to figure out how to mount them, with the least amount of wiring showing and not having to extent wires. I got it figured out though. One dual kit will be mounted to the case itself, and the other dual kit will be mounted, invertor and tubes, to the side panel. It should keep the wiring tidy. I went back after I primered the side panels and circled the areas where the bumps could still be seen and felt. I sanded those areas down some more, and then applied another coat of primer. The non window side is fine now, but the window side panel still needs more work. Stupid "bumps" on the sides. Who designed this damn case anyway? I got my top and side windows cut out, and will start etching the top window later today. I got a "Nut Case" case badge from AC Ryan, but it doesn't really fit in with my theme. I cut out the www.ACRyan.com part of the badge and will place that on the side panel instead of using the entire applique. I'm now rethinking the mirror finish idea. I'm going to be using vinyl decals and UV paint on the side panels, and I'm not sure how the UV paint would come out with layers of clear ontop. I've still got some time to decide though. You know jdogg, I really haven't been modding. I started a mod a month or so after I came to PR, and then that case went through a total of three modding projects. I suppose it all has to do with time. I mean that's what modding really is about, time and dedication.
