| 7-29-08: I'm finally ready to throw in my project for the competition. Take into consideration that I'm just starting it and envision blue backlighting and some yet to be determined details. I made the small Allspark in October for my son who was out as Optimus Prime. This was his candy bucket. It is mostly painted detail and I made it to flip upside down and look like the Allspark. By the end of the project nothing from the cases should be recognizable. In fact I probably won’t use much of either of these cases… more to follow. 7-30-08: With some layout possibilities in my head and now on paper I can layout the components that need to fit into my half cube dimensions (An entire cube is a little too big). I decided on my old Antec case for a couple of reasons… one is that I can’t live without my primary computer for long… the other is that it is older but still well built. About two dozen rivets later I was down to the tray and rear panel that I will use as the basis for the dimensions. The inner dimensions of the Allspark will be 15” X 15” with a depth of 8”. The skinning of it will take up and additional ¼”- ½”. I’ll need to do a couple of samples to see how my ideas will come out with the backlighting… more to follow. | 7-31-08 I took a break from actually working on the case for a night to work on the proof-of-concept. I laid out the design of the case front on a scale square. I used 24ga steel and an electric rotary tool to cutout and shape it. I think I went too small on the proof and found the detail I wanted to see not practical to do. Maybe doing an actual section would have been better. Anyway… as you can see it turned out good. The outer skin and framework will be 24ga steel and the acrylic will be used to dissipate the glow. I have drawn up more concept drawings and will finalize the structures design soon… more to follow. | ||

| 8-02-08 I got the wall bracket made up and the back of the structure. To call it overkill is a little bit of an understatement, but considering what I’m going to hover over my desk, I don’t think so. This back frame is going to hold the weight of the entire computer. The strip of metal is a temporary brace to hold the bottom at the 90 degrees it needs to be at. From here I can start the framing for the hard drive, DVD and power supply… more to follow 8-03-08 Just a quick update on the bracket with another picture… With the frame of the structure going down all the way I can have it stand on the ground too. With some persuasion from my friends I updated the plans to be and actual cube of 15” and now with all of the room I get I can add some special touches that I wouldn’t have had space for before. I just have to get things done in time… more to follow. Last edited by MasterAnubis; 03-August-08 at 04:33 PM.. | ||

| 8-03-08 I got more of the support structure done and the power supply plate installed. The motherboard tray now has screw hold downs. Now I need to finalize the locations for the DVD drive module and the hard drive. I’m trying to keep the pullout module for the hard drive intact. I want to keep the original upgradable to the case so that I can swap my power supply and board out and still have functional room. I’m going to also start the work on the skinning and get some blue lights and blue lit fans ordered since Fry’s Electronics decided to have only the priciest of selection on them… more to follow. | ||

| 8-04-08 Ever forward… I started from scratch on the DVD mount and made it ready for me to design the hinges for the door/cover. Not much to say about it. I started with paper and made a template to try not to use too complicated of a design. I probably could have done it a few different ways but this one stages me for the hinges without too many worries that I’ll need to cut allot out… more to follow. ... | ||

8-07-08I did preliminary finish framing… some of it might need to go in the long run for improvements as I skin it and attempt to add in cool features. I'm upset that 12V linear actuators cost so much… more to follow. Last edited by MasterAnubis; 08-August-08 at 12:22 AM.. Reason: correction | ||

| 8-10-08 Well... no pictures. Most of my progress has been layout. I ended up removing the rivets holding the two pieces together so that I could trim more off of the tray. I also got holes drilled in the doors’ acrylic to screw it onto the hinges and trimmed those more too. I’m going to add the drive supports and fill the bottom today, hopefully… more to follow. | ||

| 8-10-08 Quick follow up. I got what I was hoping to get done, done. With the deadline extended I shouldn’t need to rush but if I slow down I fear I might lose momentum. The DVD drive bay is welded in place and the space under it may be for the hard drive bay. I don’t think I’ll have room to run the cables to there because of the way I supported the drive bay. I can now work on the location of the exhaust fans and the other access I need for maintenance. I have to wait till an order shows up to finish the true layout since I don’t have 120mm fans available for mockup… more to follow. | ||

| 8-12-08 Another quick follow up. I got my fans and lights in yesterday and plugged them in for an idea what they'd look like... and I forgot to take pictures. Now I can proceed with the skinning of it and placement of the anchors for the skin. Then I can get to work on the detailed parts of the designs that only laying it out can actually show problems that need to be overcome… more to follow. | 8-12-08 I didn’t get as far as I was hoping to get this day. As you can see it is taking shape and ready to consider the overlay. I frosted the doors then spaced the outer acrylic out by an eighth of an inch to reduce the possibilities of unwanted shadows on the skin (which will also be frosted). I don’t have anything right now to power up the fans and lights so that I could show you the glow but it does need to have the overlay in place for the full effect. I was also able to drill and tap the angle iron to accommodate the 4-40 countersunk screws to hold the acrylic in place… more to follow. Last edited by MasterAnubis; 12-August-08 at 11:42 PM.. | ||
