Default Project: Lanageddon

So im making this case in tribute of my local lan // LANageddon - Calgary's Largest LAN Party \\, this will be my 4th year attending it in a row and will be our first year as a 4 day event. Im making this mod as a doorprize to one of our competitions and will be strictly a case with nothing else.

I got the case from my highschool, they were buying new systems and ive always wanted one of these cases mostly because their so plaine and there are so many directions i can go with it.

With the lanageddon mod i think i want to try to keep it as simple as possible, mostly because somebody else is going to be using it.

Gutted it out completly

Tapped up the sides, almost ready for cutting.

I have a few sketches for what id like to do to the front, but ill keep those to myself for now. Ill be cutting the window out for the design this afternoon, and then hopefully get some leeway on a side sketch, ill keep you all posted

Sounds like a great idea. Can't wait to see some pictures of where you're going to go with it.

Hopefully you got some better hardware to put inside that thing...what is that, a P3 or Celeron 466 or something in there? Or you're giving it away empty? Anyway, the case is indeed a good choice for a mod project.

Is that one of those old cases which could be converted to a desktop by rotating the drive cage? I've seen some Gateway and Compaq chassis which had this feature, and on the Gateway, it involved a module the size of "3 and a third" 5.25" bays.

I'm a big fan of desktop cases myself. I dream of a desktop about 25% taller than most, with a 120mm exhaust and FOUR 5.25" bays.... :drool pools on torso:

Might wanna remove the stiffener brace-- it blocks prime exhaust-fan space.

Agreed, the brace is probably unnecessary, but if the case has good, unobstructed right-to-left airflow and possibly a side-panel exhaust fan, airflow shouldn't be negatively impacted by it.

I love the case, very modable, im going to remove the brace, it actually dosent really support a thing, its just as sturdy without it, which i was happy about because ive taken them off a few cases and it didnt do well without. the case uses screws to hold it together instead of rivets, it probobly has 3-4 rivets total which is sortoff a relief in a small way, makes it alot sturdier. I dont think its going to let me remove the top plate very eaisily, i see no screws, or rivets, it looks like it was eaither soldered, or put in place by pressure.

Id love to send this case away with full everything, (motherboard, etc), but we dont have enough sponsors to throw sutff into it, MY plan, is to complete it, present it to compusmart, (they sponsor lanageddon), and hopefully they could sponsor this case, throw some decent parts into it, then i can have everything the way i like. I am going to send it away with a rocking powersupply regardless, even if it has to come out of my own pocket, possibly a good dvd burner/reader as well, if i hhad more cash id even throw in a modded keyboard and mouse, but thats in the future, so who cares at the moment.

The case isnt interchangable Hak Foo, i know what your saying though, i was one of the first things i experimented with.

For cooling, 120mm Fans will not fit on the front, the case just isnt wide enough, so im going to cut out the entire front, put a brand new plate there and then ill put 2 80mm fans above eachother instead. As for the back of the case, i might be able to fit a 80mm fan there, tomorrows friday, so ill have alot of time to work on it, and get everything posted, im still not sure what id like to do for the plexi etch on both sides, we shall see

thanks for the interest, expect an installment to this in the next 2 days

UpDaTe!

Cut one window out

I think i might do a bit of work on left and right side of the window cut, ive got some space
so im going to get a little creative, dont mind the shineyness in the corners, i got carried away on the corners when i was hand sanding, peeled off paint and tape, but it dosent matter the paints going to be stripped

This was more or less joking around, im trying to figure out why kind of logo i want to
put on the side of the case, im going to do a few sketches, get back to you on that

Edit: ha ha ha, just noticed, i put 2006, not 2007...

I drew up the plans for the front, when i get near a photocopier ill post it up

Im going to be painting in a week or two, and i need good paint, and wet sandpaper, etc
anyone known of some places i can order from? i cant find any in my own city

Update!

this is all the work i did this weekend with the time alloted. I worked a 10-9 shift on sunday so i got as much as i could get done on saturday.

I woke up early and got some bondo, spreaders, and sandpaper, 80 grit for stripping the paint on the sides and 220 for sanding the bondo. Im using the high grit for the bondo because ill be bondoing the front and would like to avoid scratches.

I removed the metal plate and glued the buttons so they wouldnt move

I then cut the cables off for further use later.

the switchboard is basically a filler for the bigger picture. Im bondoing over the holes to be level with the raise from the left to the right. ill also bondo over the old disk drives and over the switchboard and driver cover and even it out a bit.

i taped up the back and glued everything in place.

The first coat is the heaviest to make everything fit and so i can get a feel for how everythings going to flow, once i get the holes covered and everything level to my expectations ill then cover the switchboard and go from there. Hopefully i can have this done sometime on tuesday.

I cut out the front and did some measurments. The inside line is whats going to be cut, the outside line is the size of the sheetmetal im going to use to cover it. The sheetmetal will then have 2 80mm holes cut into it for ventilation.

I finished cutting it out. but as i had maby an inch left to cut, my reinforced dremel disk got caught in the metal and the weirdest thing happened. The screw that holes in the dremel disk was literally torn in half. I couldnt get a clear picture, but it broke in half and the dremel disk was left stuck into the metal, has this ever happened to anyone? its fekin weird... oh well momentary setback, ill pick up another one today

I also worked on the etch that will go behind the motherboard. I used a special technique i havent used before, and it turned out great

Im not sure why i used these two from the Ctrl+Alt+Del comic but thats what i thought of, and i couldnt find a more epic picture that looked cool in my mind.. anyways im extremely happy with the way this came out

Thats how it started out on the plexi, i used a adhesive paper and printed it on.

Thats all i have for now, ill keep you posted and hopefully have some sortoff update in the next few days, happy modding!

Nice work with the bondo'ing, I'm sure it'll look great once sanded smooth and painted! And tell us about that "special technique", the results look awesome! Might have to 'borrow' it!

Hey guys, i wont have much of an update for you today, its my birthday!, so ill be taking it a bit easy, i cut out the front panel and attached it with rivets

i did alot of sanding with 120grit with my mouse sander and added another layer which
should be my last, the space where the switchboard was is quite uneven, so after sanding
ill see where it is, then finish with 220 grit then 600 just to get it a little bit smoother.

waiting for my bondo to dry i got bored with my clamps...

Thats the design i thought of for the etch on the other window, any thoughts?

alright, ill maby have a tiny update tonight if i get further with the sanding

*cheers* Props to my work, Island Inkjet, for lending me their work camera. I was quite happy
to hear that i could have it until my worklog is completed

I went shopping and picked up a huge amount of gear, total pricing on everything i bought is 173.12$ Canadian. I was suprised i would dish out that much cash for a computer thats completly Probono,
then again, im not because this isnt going to leave my hands unless its absolutly perfect.

4 red led fans, 3 red led *stick thingys* (brain fart, correct me on the name)
Red Sleeving Kit, and a set of Black Anodized Screws.

I Cut out the main side plexi, and drilled the holes for the bolts, itll look much better when the Black
Gloss paint is beside the bolts.

Cut out the 80mm fans for the front, and drilled the holes for the Plexi Standoff Bolts. Also drilled the hole for the main switch

I drilled the hole for the main switch way to early in the morning and found out i drilled it in the wrong place *doh*, so i put a piece of plexi behind the old hole, and had to bondo over it

heres what the front will look like with the two pieces of Plexi, they are going to be frosted on one side with the other side un-altered. This picture is also with the new main switch placement.

Cut out the two holes on the front as well.

heres what the top of the case on the inside looks like with both my cd drive and a psu outer casing looks like, notice theres no room for an exhaust fan?

Theres also no room for an exhaust fan here eaither. So ive decided that im going to but it on the top, sticking out, i came up with a creative way to disguise it as well, so youll get to see the finishings of that tomorrow.

I forgot to answer your question, i apoliogize, the case is going to be given away empty, id like to get a powersupply though, but fund wise i might not be able to, im hoping i can get one that they were going to use as a prize

Alright, so thats where i am, tomorrow i have from 7 in the morning until 2 in the afternoon to work on this, so i will hopefully get a large amount of work completed, anyways, see you then

Later
