Default Well, I was going to offer money...

...for someone to build me a database, but it looks like I might be buying this instead.

LINK

I've got over 700 DVDs right now and I'd like to get them cataloged. I've taken the DVD, put them in a numbered sleeve in my box (see THIS), and taken the DVD cover sleeve and put them into a file folder. I'd like to know where my movies are in the box so I was wanting someone to design me a database, but after looking at the software above, I just may go that route instead.

Has anyone used it or know of anyone who has used that software before? More than likely, I'll buy the Christmas deal and get the handheld scanner to go with it.

Thanks,

Rob

Yeah, I've used it and I truly recommend it. And since you've got 700, do see if you can find a cheap bar code reader, it makes it soooo much easier to catalog each item.

Thanks.

Now I've got the monumental task of trying to find a barcode scanner that'll work on these types of barcodes.

I'm going to go ahead and get the program but only if I can find a good barcode scanner pretty cheap.

Hmm, what should the barcode scanner have, other than a USB connector, and what is cheap?

I remember reading somewhere about CUE Cat, which was a barcode scanner which came free with some lousy internet things a while back. There's lot's of info floating around the net on how you can mod it. Not sure if you can use it but there seem to be lots of them on eBay for sale, most dirt cheap (shipping costing more than the unit). You should check it out and see if it's what you're looking for.

Thanks for the +rep! You just gave me my third little square,

Thanks, Thrasher, but I was looking for something in the sub-$30 range.

Think maybe I'm going to have to e-Bay this one and yes, they sell the modified CueCat scanners on e-Bay for around $10.00. I'm also going to read up on what the CueCat was really about in the first place, but the modified ones don't have the "Big Brother" in them, now.

Thanks again.

Well, I did get something done over the holiday and that was to upload almost my entire collection to this new program. I'm re-updating it because I forgot to check the two boxes to pull the info from Amazon.com and from IMDB.com, too.

I'm going to go through, change some of the DVD cover photos (since some idiots decided to upload a movie poster instead of the DVD cover) and delete the back cover photos (since I don't have all the back covers, then I want no back covers).

Once this is done, I can upload it to my website and you can browse the movies I've got.

This program kicks butt!

Too bad you dont have a mac, there is a program that turns your built in webcam into a scanner and adds everything to a digital library. Delicious library.

So I am guessing you found a decent barcode scanner?
Keep in mind that most of the available (if not all) barcode scanners use a text-based driver so they are really easy to get working with nearly any computer.

Thought about grabbing the music version of this. Did you ever find a scanner?

Actually, I didn't.

After working retail on/off for 10 years, I got quite used to using a number pad. I had taken all the covers out of my DVD cases (tossed the cases) and put them into file folders for easier storage. I just flipped through them, typing in the bar code by hand. Didn't make any errors that I can see now that I'm going back through and double-checking the covers and adding in two custom fields (file location of the DVD in the case...i.e., A-001 is Sleeve 1 in Case A).

No biggie.

Hopefully I might have something up tomorrow for you folks to browse through.

Rob

EDIT: I'm sorely tempted to get the MP3 program now, too. With about 36,000 songs taking up about 140G, I need something to catalog it all.

EDIT II: Scratch uploading for two reasons. First is that the hosting service I'm using...I can't figure out how to do bulk uploads on about 1,500 files (which includes the thumbnail and the larger DVD photo). Secondly, the second I upload it, I'm going to have everyone and their grandmother hotlinking the photos and the webhost will shut it down pretty quick.

So, unfortunately...no dice on uploading it, but I did include a couple of screenshots of what it looks like in a browser window.

The first photo is of an index page. I chose 12 per page, but you can go up to just about as many as you want (I stopped around 300 per page). You can see a link to each page across the top.

The second photo is of a detail screen. You'll see that you can navigate this way, also. In addition, you can insert links to different web pages, such as Amazon.com or IMDB.com.

You don't have to use this format. There are a bunch of different types of templates HERE...I just haven't had time to browse them and find one I want.

Sorry, I just wanted to revive this old thread. I don't want to sound like a whore for these guys but let me tell you, I am 110% impressed with their application. I'm using the Movie one and I'm considering getting one or two others.

Back to your regularly scheduled web surfing.

I recently picked up a modified CueCat scanner off eBay for $10 to do the same thing. Though I use GuruLib Home Library Cataloging for my books mainly. Though the DVD and CDs are next on the list.
