Default Access 2000 Database questions...

HELP!!!

In the process of designing a database for my work. Since everyone else is computer illiterate, tag I'm it. I'm supposed to design an Access database to track certain things but I have some questions first....

I'm going to install it on a shared network drive where more than one person is going to have access to it. Is there a way where more than one person can be accessing the database at the same time performing updates on another entry in the database?

I'll have some more questions later but first I gotta track down a book to see how this is going to be done.

Thanks,

Rob

EDIT: Or if you've got a book or learning software, let me know so we can deal ASAP...

Yes, it can be done. Tried to find the name of a book I loaned out, but never got back, and was not succesful. If I think of it I will post.

In the meantime I found these articles that gives some ideas how to set it up, and you may find helpful.

You're looking to perform record locking. Once you've created the DB, go to Tools, Options, Advanced

You'll see a some checkboxes and a radio group on the right side (I'm using 2003, can't remember if it looks the same in 2000 and below, I haven't done serious Access development in a while.) You'll see the options for open mode, shared or exclusive (self expanatory) and also for record locking. What you're looking to do is "edited record" which will keep 2 people from changing the same row at the same time.

An excellent Access linky below (will save you $50 on the book):

eidt: Also if you're using Microsoft's DFS (Distributed File System - replication software) it DOES NOT play nicely with access databases. You'll have to map directly to the share, instead of the domain share.

Thank you Foe & mrcracker for the links!

Rob - I have a Step By Step Access 2003 book w/cd that contains the pdf version of the book. If you want a copy of the ebook let me know. One of my new duties it to learn Access and assist the db guy with "the little stuff."

I wish I could help you more but it has been several years since I have had a need to use Access. I did own the "Access 2000 Developer's Handbook". For being a handbook it is 2 volumes, but anytime I had a question it had the answer. It's a bit pricey. Maybe you could check on EBAY for it used or something. It saved my A** several times. Good Luck and Good Hunting.
