Default Java programming

I'm taking a Java programming class in college and i'm wondering what a good book would be for a person who hasn't programmed before. Also, if at all possible I would like a recommendation that has a lot of the Java syntax in the book.

Java is really a great introductory language, or a breath of fresh air from that M$ crap.

Without a doubt, the best book is "SAMS Teach Yourself java in 21 Days".

Well thanks for the input. And by the way, I was looking for a supplementary book to the class required one, because that one has way too much assumed knowledge for those that have extensive C++ experience.

my first java book in my CS1 class was "Java Software Solutions" by John Lewis and William Loftus. Very very easy book to learn from.

I used the very same book for my Java class as well. It's written very well with a hand-holding approach with dozens of examples, analogies, and pics
