Talking Badge harvesting technique: Illusionist Badge

How to properly harvest pet Illusionists

I promised to write up an article to tell a few friends how easy it is to get the Illusionist badge for defeating 200 summoned Illusionist. Unfortunately, this isn't the article because there is no easy way to get this badge. This, my friends, is one of the hardest "Defeat" badges in the CoH game.

The easiest archtype to harvest for this badge with is, of course, a level 50 blaster. Yes, I said a level 50 blaster. The reason for this is two-fold. First, you must be able to provoke the Master Illusionist and hold her attention long enough for the spawn to reset and secondly, to make sure you land at least one hit on the summoned Illusionist when they come out of phase-shift and before they go back into phase-shift and disappear. The reason why I say a level 50 is because you are high enough to prevent her from doing any extreme damage to you whatsoever. Yes, she may be a level 41 but more often than not, she's able to knock you out of the air (Fly) and/or knock off any defensive toggles you may have. However, being a level 50 aliviates that problem once you find a Master Illusionist.

To defeat a summoned Illusionist, you must first find a Master Illusionist. Simply defeating a regular Illusionist doesn't count...they have to be summoned by the Master Illusionist. The only place outside of a mission to find a Master Illusionist is in Peregrine Island (PI).

To find this Master Illusionist in PI, you have to look in one of two main places. The first is at the northern end of the Bayside Dock neighborhood under and around the half-finished pole barn across from the open parking lot (I'll load a map later). Another place is on one of the two ships on the docks at the south end of the Bayside Dock neighborhood. Don't worry...if they aren't there, simply do a lap around PI and come back. For some reason, the villains in PI spawn at a really obscene rate. I've had them disappear on me when I approached them only to have a different villain class "fade in".

Once you find her, no doubt she'll have some company. Don't worry about them yet. What you need to do is to first get her attention by smacking her upside the head with a primary attack. Not one that will do a large amount of damage, just enough to get her attention. Instantly, she'll more than likely try to use a psychic attack on you. Don't worry. Being a level 50 offsets that. What you need to do now is turn your attention to her companions and finish them off real quick. You don't want to get tied up with them because she'll make her escape.

Once you finish off her companions, hit her with another primary blast to let her know that you didn't forget about her. By this time, she's already summoned a Phantasm, which the Phantasm in turn summons a Decoy (don't worry, you'll never hit the Decoy so don't even try). Then, she'll summon a Dark something or other that looks pretty cool, and hit you with a few psychic attacks.

By now, she'll summon three Illusionists to do her bidding. Careful that you don't jump the gun here as when they are summoned, they are in phase-shift. After a couple of seconds, they one-by-one drop out of phase-shift and you can still hit them. My method was when I saw the first summoned Illusionist come out of phase-shift, I clicked on Aim and then, while still targeting the Master Illusionist, clicked on my AoE of Fire Ball (which is slotted +2 with one acc). Nine time out of ten, you'll score a hit on the three summoned Illusionist standing next to her. That tenth time, however, you won't...which is why I immediately go to Rain of Fire with the MI as the target. Rain of Fire does extremely little damage to a villain; however, what it does do is give you multiple chances to hit the summoned Illusionist and that's all you need for it to count towards your 200 goal.

You don't actually have to entirely defeat the summoned Illusionist to get credit, you just have to score one point of damage to her; hence, the AoE attacks when they are summoned. Reset time, roughly figured, is approximately 320 seconds. When you figure out the math, you're talking roughly 4 hours of your time if you decide to solo. Best find a mate to help you out. Or, if you are lucky enough like I was, I milked two MIs for over an hour by the time I perfected this harvesting technique and was awarded the Illusionist badge and the Archmage accolade.

Anyway, that may not be the quickest and the easiest method for harvesting summoned Illusionist for the Illusionist badge and Archmage accolade, but it worked for me.

Look for other badge harvesting techniques from me in the near future.

Nice write up, bro. I absolutely agree with you: this badge is the hardest to get with the possible exception of the Dimensional Warder badge (you have to defeat all of the Praetorian AVs for this).

For Those That Don't Yet Have The Badge:
If you're lucky enough to get a mission that will spawn Master Illusionists (usually have to have a full/nearly full team), save that mish and farm it. It's still a bugger to get the badge, but if you're in a mish you don't have to worry about outside interference from other toons who don't know that you're badge hunting
