Default How to cut glass bottle? dremel? hack saw? reply ASAP

okay i just got the biggest kick of inspiration ever, but it involves cutting glass....a glass bottle.....if you must know, a Bawls bottle i have sitting next to me......

Can i just use my dremel to cut it?
Would a hack saw work better?

If you are looking to cut it circumferentially (like cutting the top off) fill to the desired cut point with hot oil. Then tap lightly with a hammer just above the fluid level.

Should break cleanly all the way around.

I guess you could possibly use a blowtorch to soften the glass and then cut it with something. But hot shards of glass flying around woulndt be my idea of a party

if you are drilling a hole...Diamond tipped drill bit.
lots of patience.
eye protection,mask(breathing filter)
glass dust not only sucks, but is quite damaging to the eyes, lungs, mouth etc.

wouldnt it be easier to jsut cut the case?

my question is how do you cut a drill hole in it.. is there a glass drill bit? I'd think just using anormal diamond drill would crack the glass.

Have you tried a big rock?

Seriously, would one of the glass cutters the sheet glass guys use work? Take a bottle to the local glass place and ask them if they can do it, prolly only a couple of dollars if they can...

Fine in theory, but I'm not sure about the safety aspect - too much risk of frying your hands and/or your giblets if you slip up !

A similar principle is used for opening old bottles of wine where there's a risk of the cork breaking up & you don't want to have to strain it through your teeth.

Traditionally, you're supposed to use a pair of very hot tongs & a wet feather, but in practice a blowtorch & a wet q-tip work better - you just gently(ish) heat in & around the area you want to cut (all the way round), then wipe the q-tip where you want the cut - the top just pings off.

Practice makes perfect, but you get a much neater cut than by any mechanical means.

very good timing on this question, i have been looking at a vase that would be perfeect for a completel non-computer-related project i've been planning but i needed a tuble open on both sides to work right and was thinking of how to cut the bottom off.

what kind of hot oil are we talking? motor oil? cooking oil? veggie shortening like they use at restaurants to deep fry? no matter? thought that way would be a PITA to cut the bottom off of a vase...

They actually used to sell like a hobby kit for cutting bottles when I was a kid.

You could cut the tops off bottles to make drinking glasses, so on.

I'm with MDk though, wouldnt it be easier to just cut the case?

Okay, well.....late last night i decided that what i'm gonna do....is....cut the front of the case so i can slide the bottle in sorta diagonally so the tops sticking out......then , before i actually mount the bottle, i'm donna do a few things......number one, wire up a few bright blue LED's for inside the bottle. Then, i'm going to drill a hole in the bottom.....i think i have one of those diamond bits somewhere....then i'm going to get a pushbutton switch to which i will mount the bottle cap to and put it just inside the top of the bottle....ge tthe point? push the top of the bottle, all the lights and stuff come on! or maybe i'll make that be for the power switch......either way, it sounds awsome!

So a sudden change of plans as far as the case....no longer the penguin/igloo idea, but i'm gonna head back to the autozone or wal mart or wherever i can get to today, buy some dark blue paint and do the inside of the case light blue and the outside of it dark blue......

Yeah, I think a regular ol $4 glass cutter would work ...

with a jig so the bottle sits at the proper angle as you cut...

And then the cut is ragged so I think ya get something called emery paper to smooth it.

And the you use a lo propane torch at the very end.

Which is why when I wanted the top off a small bottle I took it to a pro-cutter and paid him like $14 maybe?

Sometimes it's just not worth acquiring the tools and the skills for a one-time job. Something you're gonna do many times - that's different

nah...i got so many scratches and a few cracks that i had to fix with flashblack glue that i decided that since i already got bondo on the bottle, to cover the whole thing...i'm gonna paint it a deep blue and make it real shiney and put the bawls logo sticker thing on it, still gonna have the bottle cap be the power button for the computer...lol. right now the whole front pice is coverd in bondo, its fairly smooth now but i gotta touch it up a little tomorrow before i even concider painting....plus i gotta go get some more paint ;-)
