![]() hi, im thinking of doing a mod to a table as well as a computer. the above pic is a rough sketch of a side view of a table, the black is timber and the red is a computer monitor. what i am hopin to achieve is for the monitor to move up and down, from under the table, from the push of a button, to do that i would need a motor or sum type of hydralic device i'm thinking. i'm not very good with motors or things lik that so i'm wondering if anyone here knows of a way to make the monitor move up and down. also does anyone know of a place to buy these motors or parts, i live in Australia so an online place would be most helpful. all help appreciated. | ||

| Your skills with the brush rival davinci ![]() Hmm You might be able to set up a pulley system which would be fairly easy. Wheres the computer going to go? If that monitor is going to move so's the cable so you'll want to have a nice cable managment system. P.S WELCOME TO PCAPEX Glad to have you onboard ![]() | ||

| Apex Master Tech | i'm assuming its going to be an LCD? if so, i would think mount some type of rail (like a sliding rail ment for like keyboard trays (make sure it can support up to the weight of the monitor) attach that to the monitor and a back plate behind the monitor, then you've got the basic up down motion, then find an actuator (spelling) that will push up the rail and then reverse pull down the rail. Not sure if that can actually be done but that would be my first experiment. good luck sound awesome. here you go, this is a super fast example of what i mean (i love google images) the top line is the desk Last edited by computerman; 10-July-06 at 02:20 PM.. | |

| I once installed a TV into the countertop of a kitchen, so I know it can be done. Although I'm pretty sure they paid roughly $5,000 for the setup. It did come with a sweet remote that you could swivel the monitor 360 degrees to face out into the den from the kitchen. Just about anything is possible with enough time/money. Good luck and let us know how it turns out! EDIT - You might be able to devise a rail, and use those lifts like they use on hatches and hoods to vehicles (the ones that are like mini shock absorbers). Then all you would need is a latch to hold it down when you push it into the desk. | ||

| this is for an assignment toward my HSC, im currently in yr 11 at highschool, ive known of pimprig for at least 2 yrs i got the pc chopshop book just havn't written on forums. yeh it is LCD, i was think initially what i might do is strip teh case of the lcd and make a case so that teh lcd would b embedded in a big block, so that teh block moves up and down. the computer is most likely to be mini-itx possibly VIA because for this assignment i'm mainly marked on funciton so really performance of teh computer doesnt matter as long as get windows workin fine. keyboard would probably be wireless as would mouse. to wrathofsocrus: thats what my dad wanted me to do he thinks thats teh way to go using gas struts or to use a low tensile(i think thats what he said) spring, with a push latch lik u see on teh front of CRT's or TV's , so that all you do is push on teh block and it comes up automattically and tehn wen finished push it down. thanks for your help, i didn't know i'd get such a speedy reply. sorry about some of my spelling, in a rush. | ||

| Just a thought... if the monitor is that far forward - how are you going to get your legs underneath when the monitor is down? If the idea is that the desk is just a desk when the monitor is down it would be no good not being able to sit at it! lol Other than that a quality idea! looking forward to see how this turns out ![]() Mark | ||

| it is still in drafting phase, but i'm expecting this desk to be a bit longer than normal, but not by much. hopefully that will fix it. also in the shelf underneath where the pc will be, there will probably be a hole to let the monitor slide through. the specs im looking at so far is probably a mini-itx board possibly VIA, because all i hav to do is get this computer to function i don't hav to mod it up, maybe when this is finished and i have more time, i might consider it. the case will be a simple rectangular acrylic box underneath the desk with fans on the short sides of the rectangle for passive cooling. i'll probably have a 512mb stick of generic RAM and a small sized HDD as well as a slim line dvd burner. all cheap stuff for now, until i can master the technique of getting this thing to work. then as said before, i might try and get sum high performance parts running maybe even an ATX board although that will need major adjustments. | ||

| hey guys, its been a long time since i posted in this thread. due to studying and getting on with the project without posting. sorry guys. but yer heres a quick update, alot more to come. if you read the first post, you will see that i'm trying to build a computer table with a LCD monitor embedded inside it. at first i was only going to make this for show and then probably sell it. well my ideas have changed i'm still going with the same idea but ive decided i'm going to keep the desk and make it to my liking. so for that reason the main layout has changed. here's a look at the design i've gone with. btw i've almost finished the whole project, so within the next few days ill b posting most of my pics (almost 300 pics!!) ![]() the brown stuff is KARRI timber veneer over 25mm thick brimsboard (chipboard) there is 6 drawers the green stuff is green vinyl (leather was too expensive) in total it is 3 movable modules which will be screwed together with cabinet connectors the middle green section moves up and down for the monitor the clear stuff infront of the middle module is glass heres a list of hardware: asus a8n sli premium amd 3800+ dual core 750W thermaltake toughpower 2x 7600gt gainward set in SLI 1.6Terabytes of space split over about 6 HDD's 22" wide screen LCD 3.5" multi card reader slim line pioneer dvd burner theres probably more but i can't remember them right now, you'll see them in all the pictures ![]() any questions please do not hesitate to post. i know i havn't been very thorough with the explanation but i'm in quite a rush and i really want to post this message. | ||

| Apex Techie Lite | Hey man, I'm currently trying to put an LCD in the case, and I don't know about you, but mine was incredibly heavy! If you take off the cages and put it in some wood or something, it'll be light enough for a (cheaper) actuator. | |

| Many top end hot tub manufacturers have a LCD TV that pops up with the help of small electrical motors connected to a screw type assembly. You may be able to buy the whole pre- engineered assembly and save yourself a lot of time. I serviced several on 'Cal Spas' and found them very well built. Hope this helps...Zoya | ||

| HOLY FREAKIN' COW Y'ALL ! He did *not* mod an existing desk. He BUILT a desk with a computer inside! That's gotta be about the biggest custom case we've had here yet. DO check out his slide show - it moves right along and details much of the building process. Only thing I don't get is where do the screen controls go? -MF | ||

| haha. Monsignor Funkibut: the controls go in the bottom left drawer, i will definetly need to put photos up of that. i recently also put some firewire, usb, lan, and 7.1 sound headers on teh left side of the left drawers. it looks sweet when people ask me bout my desk and i tell them to come over to my house, and then all they see is a desk there like wtf wheres the computer and im like watch this. i open the bottom left drawer and there like wtf is that a clear computer case, and then they hear the motor and see it come up. it truly looks mad when you watch their jaws drop would you guys also believe that i turned 18 like 2 weeks ago, so i was 17 when i built this and 16 when i thought of it . we had a showcase night for the school and because i was building the desk at home, it was too big to bring in every 2 weeks to show the teachers our progress. so the teachers came to my house and no one in the classes had ever seen mine until the showcase night but i had seen theres coz most ppl had built their stuff at school. when the other kids saw it they were like hey mad desk then they saw the switch on the side and were like wats the switch for, and again i was like hehe watch this and just watching their faces it was the best feeling. oh yer did i mention that just above the top left drawer is a thin laptop dvd burner but not the ones which pop out but one which auto feeds the cd/dvd like a car. of course theres no buttons because the button is on the desktop; thankyou yahoo widgets!!! ill try and get pics up of the sides and the computer case etc, prob wont be able to do them for another 2 days since i got work. | ||
