Default Few painting and window/lighting questions

How do I paint the innards of a case? It's just a big silver metal frame, do I sand it all down and paint from there or is there another proper way to do it? Any specific paint I should use? I'm painting it black.

How should I trim the edges of a case window, without taking up too much space? I have some automotive trim but it's hard to put on smaller designs (I have cut out some octagons for a side window and it's hard to put on, I might try cutting the edging and making the edges match around the octagon so it looks cleaner and not so rounded).

Thanks so much. This place is awesome!

for trim check out performance-pcs.com and look under window kits and molding. They have plenty to rubber stuff to choose from. As far as painting...what brand/kind of paint are you thinking?

First off:

Welcome!!!

As far as painting the inside of your case...

When I painted the inside of mine I did not sand it first. Just cleaned it out real good and then put down 3 coats of Rustoleum (silver) and let her dry over night. Turned out wonderful. Just make sure to go slow, there are a lot of little spaces on the inside of a case that you can miss, and it is easy to over spray and cause drips.

Good luck!

I am using Rustoleum Painters Touch (black, spray paint). Should I primer it first? Thanks for the help guys!

i always clean, then use a grey primer on basicily everything i paint. Priming first will allow better looking finish and much nicer paint contact.

WELCOME TO PC APEX!!

Right - Step 1. Install Adobe acrobat reader
Step 2. Read this: Chapter 8: Painting (From http://forums.pcapex.com/painting/35..._painting.html - thanks MNPCTech_guy )

Then read the MNPCtech tutorial at www.mnpctech.com

That's all you'll need

It'll be easier to get a good finish if you drill out the rivets on the chassis and take it all apart (makes sanding a bizillion times easier!) otherwise, just spray carefully.

Black's a great colour for the insides - you can sleeve cables in black, making them hard to see (great for those ones that you just can't hide ) and UV stuff stands out heaps better too!
Best of luck!

Thumbs up

Just like Uv said Prymer is your friend.
You first want to clean the case very well with rubbing alcohol to remove any dirt, grease or finger prints.
I like to remove any imperfections with 000steel wool but not necesary. Just remember 2 or 3 thin coats are better than 1 thick coat. The same applies for the paint. Just make sure to let each coat dry completely before the next coat or cracking will acure in the paint.
Good Luck

I go with Masterp on this... the innards of the case don't have to be mirror gloss black, imho... satin or
matte work well too...especially with UV reactive parts, lights, fans etc... and there is less sanding involved.... I'd still take it apart though...

Welcome to PC Apex!

when i painted my case i took it apart (drilled out all the rivets) so that all of the insides would be painted. i used steel wool to scuff the metal then primed it. if you dont take it apart you might get bare spots from where the spray is blocked. it depends on the case design and how complex it is.
i suggest the painting guide too since its a big help when thinking about what paint you want to use and how to prep. a little tip- personally enamel > laquer. laquer may seem faster but in the end you will be happier taking the time to use enamel and it wont be eaten off by something like denatured alcahol.
