| Bondo can be used to fill in areas of acrylic. Cracks, holes you don't want etc. But the adhesive properties are not as good with acrylics as other plastics. Especially is you don't rough up the acrylic by sanding and clean properly. But Bondo losses some of it's structural capabilities with the plexi and acrylic families of materials. You'll especially notice a problem is the acrylic piece is going to be flexed from time to time. Like a window on a door. If I have to do repairs on a plexi or acrylic I use a two part expoxy resin and if I have to thicken it up to a paste consistency, , I use milled fiberglass dust. | ||

| your best bet for fiber glass materials would be a marine supply store, they carry the Dust that prime was talking about and they should also carry thin shreds (chop) that i like to use for structural integrity (both usually come in a thick tube). For this project i would stick more to the fiberglass products, resin-mat-powder-chop-dura glass. for primer....the final grit shouldnt be any less than 320 grit unless your using filler primer (thicker) which you can go down to 220 or depending on your mixture or if you using a ratttle can, down to 180 (not reccomended unless its REALY thick stuff that doesnt shrink much). if some of the primer is going on the bare acrylic then i just scuff it up with some scotch bright, and use some plastics adhesion promoter before you spray and that "should" take care of chipping problems with minor flexing. now, with glass products its very rare to get the product realy smooth like with a putty, so pic yourself up a tube of marine glaze. its like a watered down bondo and is very flexable, this stuff is only used for filling in pin holes and deeper scratches. Would be a great to put a very thin coat over the glassed area and sand down smooth with 180grit-220 then 320. Remember, when finish sanding (sanding right before any paint) , use a light touch. So instead going over an area 3 times with a normal touch, go over it 7-8 times with a light touch hope that helps. -edit- oops, remember to realy scuff the parts where the glassing material is meeting the acrylic....like with 80 grit. and always use wax and grease remover before paint. | ||

| Apex Master Tech Apprentice | Actually there is easier way to work with (In your case, filling in gaps) acrylic. All it requires is an old modder's standby-- hazardous chemicals and waste materials. In this case, ZENNZZO gives the solution in this guide. | |

I've read the guide and it's an invaluable tool for understanding this scope of work. I do have to say however, that working with Methyl Ethyl Ketone is not something to be taken lightly. Although it can still be purchased (surprisingly) in paint stores and home centers, in almost every state this chemical has been outlawed or at least heavily regulated in manufacturing use because it is so hazardous to your health. Consult the MSDS before using this stuff. It is known that MEK can cause severe damage to your liver and will penetrate the skin, directly entering the blood stream, if you do not wear protective gear. Inhaling the fumes are equally bad. Use Acetone as a substitute whenever possible and don't use MEK any more than you really have to! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
