Default Anyway to make case so HDD's are totally silent?

I need a totally silent rig, as I have to use my rig @ a huge party @ school for Grad. It has to be silent so it can't be heard. There will be lots of speaking from people and I don't want it's loud ass noise to interfere. My only problem is muffling the loud HDD's, is there anyway to do this? , now I get to show off my rig to hundreds and hundreds of people.

Wrap foam rubber around the cages for a temporary fix. Keep it loose enough for the drives to breath.

Well, you could always make an acrylic box with an intake and exhaust port and then submerge it all in a fish tank....

I have heard of taking old mouse pads and fraying them and taping them to the inside of your case, i dont know how well that will work or how it will affect cooling.

Adding some rubber grommets onto the mounting points of the drive to quell vibrations might help.

It's not virbations, its just the damn whirring noise. The drives are silent seak and have Fluid Dynamic Bearing motors, but its just the whir of the motors thats the problem. @ the fishtank idea, although that would work if I made a totally watertight acrylic case and had the PSU vent out of the top. I might do that if I get tons of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ just for fun as it seems like a neat idea. Any ideas to block the whir? I don't care if cooling performance of anything is affected, I just need a silent rig, as having a silent rig would be nice, and I finally have come to a point where I need it to be silent due to me hosting the music system @ my school's grad.

i saw something a while back where the harddrive was suspended by rubber washers type of thing ...it was strange it was woven it a x pattern and then mounted somehow...no screws just all tension fitted.

Thanks putwig, that gave me a lightbulb. I'm going to go around and see if I can find any of that carpet foam stuff.

Oh. It's actually my 5 Maxtors that are doing it. My only Western Digital, a 120GB SE model, is silent spin + silent seek. my maxtors are all silent seek, but their spin is so ****ing loud; basically just a high pitched whine.

you could try Dynamat .would think it works better on a window-less rig though.

Maxtor has a utility you can download called AMSET that puts Maxtor hard drives in "performance" or "quiet" mode by changing how the drive heads seek data on the platters...

I still dont really see the point of quieting the computer for a graduation. I was the av guy for a recent prom and noise from a computer would have been the least of my worries. If you were in a really really tiny room and everyone was just sitting and not talking, then I would worry about it, but in the case of a graduation, most people will be talking or wont even care about the computers noise in the first place.

Now to be helpful. Bit-tech recently did a review on a silent drive enclosure. You can find it here: http://bit-tech.net/review/182/ . Enjoy.

Carbon, I hope you didn't fight with him.

It's not his fault that he is a n00b. Your idea of hanging them from silicone tubing sounds pretty damn cool. And that would be a sure way of removing any vibration at all. Good Idea.
