Lightbulb What do think of my theme?

Ok, for my first mod, I plan on modding my case to the theme of submarines. My dad has been in the Navy for also 30 years now, spenting like 26 yrs on submarines. I think this would be a cool mod as there have been several for WWII, and the Infantry mod. I was just wondering about what you guys think.

I plan on putting a sub doing an emergency surface on the top of the case, and making the case it's self look like the conning tower of the sub, complete with the snorkel, antenna, and parascope. I was thinking about putting the dive planes on and making them moveable, but the whole moving part I dont know how to do.I plan on putting a sub coming out of the side panel and shooting a torpedo, and making it spring loaded and you can press a button on the front of the case that will launch it. I plan on putting a side window on with on etched drawing and writing. The front of the case will contain firing switch along with a saftey key. I'm thinkg of putting a web cam on the parascope to give the effect of life like.

The mod its self will require probably about $2k in tools and supplies, mostly because this gives me a chance to buy that dremel and some others tools I want. Also, fiberglass, and paint, and eletronics for wiring aren't excatly cheap. Im estimating something around 2-4000 man hours because of the custom fabrication of the models and things that I'll probably **** up on a couple of times.

The words will be the following
"Run Silent,
Run Deep." <--- It will be staggered like this will pics in middle of them and this at the bottom
United States Navy at the bottom

I plan on upgrading the internals too, but haven't figured out how i could run sli with dual processors, watercooled, and keep it all contain within the box and not cutting holes for things. This will probably have to be planned out once i complete the case.

This is the closest thing i could find that resimbles my case:
Chenming, 901A-SSI-0 Full Tower 1.0mm SECC Server Computer Case

So, what do you think about this massive under taking?

Does anyone have any links on custom electronicly control doors, I am asking because the antenna, parascope, and snorkel each have their own sliding door that opens to allow them to deploy. Also, how could you interface these with the computer to be able to deploy them? using serial?

You're water cooling, Right?
It would only seem appropriate!

Heh, Make the WC fluid blue, and put a little submarine in the reservoir.

Thats a good idea. I'm going to be mounting the reservior and fans during the build. I'll be replacing the internals once the build is complete and i have saved up enough $$.

Oh, just found this....In terms of making the little periscope and doors work, FOE posted this a while back. It's a great source for finding lineal actuators. See this thread.http://forums.pcapex.com/showthread.php?t=59410

I uploaded some pics.

The toy sub lookin things is an old RC sub for the pool that I had. Its broke, but i think I can use it for molding the sub that will be doing the emergency surface on top of the case.

The other pic is for the top etching on the side of the case. It will contain the words "Run Silent, Run Deep"
The pic is of the USSN 712 Atlanta. It was decommissioned about 6-7 yrs ago. The arrow is pointing to my father. He was the Captain of this ship for its last 4 remaing years in service and during its decommision. I just have to find a scanner big enough to scan the image in

Default A Sweet Find

Digging around in my dads box of old medals and stuff, I found this bad boy. Its a scale replica of a Los Angelos Attack Sub. This is what im going to use for the subs on the top and side of the case.

I like the theme.
Did you ask your dad if you can have these goodies? Don't presume that "it will be ok".

There will be eye candy needless to say. The sonar thing would be cool, I'd just have to find on LCD screen, and write a program to display the sonar graphs, however, I'd probably have to learn some language becuase the only language I know is Java. Most of the case will be black except for the water spray and and the antenna colors. The etched windows will be lighted by blue LED's. I plan on using some real medals of rank pins on the case with my dads approval, or pay him to buy me some .

I found some cool medlals. Heres some links
Rank Medals 04, and 06 rank pins
Officer Crest This one is a shirt cuff use for dress whites
Breast Insignia Officer, and SSBN Deterent Patrol (one partol) pins

I found a place that sales programmable LCD screens and touchscreen LCD too.
And Here

For the water spray:
I will first make paster-a-paris casts of the sub so when i screw up, nothing but a quick pour of bond will fix in the mold. I plan on adding the spray effect by using a small paint brush and slowly adding bond to it. Of course this will be a slow and painful process, probably screwing up several times, but that just goes to show for the level of detailim prepared to into this project. I plan to airbrush the case with Acrylic Enamel, Automotive Paint then clear coat then hell out of the thing. I gonna have to see if I can bribe my buddy into letting me use his automotive paint booth for the night to airbrush the case.

This weekend i plan to buy the plexiglass for etching. It will be proabably be either 1/2, or 3/8 thick sheet. After that, its time to hit kinos to see how big of a scanner they have.

Think epoxy like used in model railroading to make water and splash spray from coastal setups!
