| Apex Techie Wannabe | Im gettting a new PSU and am going modular for two reasons, I am buiding this new system with an acrylic case and I absolutely HATE having all those exra wires hanging around. The problem is that I have found a power supply I like but I dont like the cables that come with it. The power supply with cables I like has problems from what I have read so Im not getting it. I would like to find somewhere that sells the cables for modular PSU's separately. I woulld prefer UV reactive or at least a bright neon orange or pink. A company called PowerRight has some real badass looking cables with their modular PSU's but the PSU's themselves aren't that appealing to me. Plus none of them are SLI or even have PCI-E plugs on them and I'm not going to feed my SLI setup with a bunch of molex connectors. Yeah I know I could just resleeve all the cables on a PSU I get but I dont want that headache. I will aready have enough sleeving to do when I go to putting this thing together. http://www.pcextreme.com/catalog/sku/psu-50.html check it out. So if anyone knows where I can find some of these for sale on their own please let me know. A big pet peeve I have about a lot of these modular cables is that for some stupid reason whoever makes them doesn't bring the sleeving all the way to the ends. This looks cheap and stupid to me. Any modular cables I get MUST cover all of the wires from connector to connector like the ones visible in the above link. BTW, I meant to say MODULAR in the title NOT MODUAL Thanks in advance. | First off, Welcome to PimpRig! You've come to the right place to harvest good ideas from a lot of talented people. . Most modular power supplies utilize proprietary cables. The companies that make the power supplies usually sell extra cables; you may have to contact them for finding an oulet. It's hard to tell but the power supply you showed looks like it uses normal molex connectors on both ends, meaning if you don't like the cables you could make your own. But that doesn't seem cost effective and just sound like extra work to me. I'm presently using an Ultra power supply. http://www.ultraproducts.com/ They have recently expanded their line of modular power supplies, and the cables seem to be made better than the power supply you looked at, even on the older original X-Connect that I have. Extra cables are easy to find and buy online. Get Ultra products at Tiger Direct, and they have an eBay outlet that often unloads stuff at ridiculous prices. I got my X-Connect 500W titanium form the Tiger Direct eBay outlet for 30 bucks. Then there are the Hiper Power supplies. http://www.frozencpu.com/psu-164.html?id=SsmW9ikH I recently aquired one of these courtesy of PimpRig, (you should be so glad you joined) and although I haven't fired it up yet, it's a downright beautiful piece of equipment and the cable connections are very secure and good looking. It's going in my next build. Long story short, rather than doinking around with trying to find extra cables for that power supply you're looking at, just move up to a better power supply manufacturer. | ||

| Apex Techie Wannabe | Yeah I really like the Ultra power supplies I love the cables on the x-connect PSU's but the x-connect doesn't support SLI or have PCI-E power at all for that matter. The x-2 connect does but I dont like those force flex cables at all those things look like total crap to me. Now, if I could get an x-2 connect PSU with the x-connect style cables on it I would be set. That would be EXACTLY what I want. I considered just getting the x-connect and then getting a couple of the 4-pin to 6-pin PCI-E cables but for one the x-connect isnt SLI certified and it only has a single 12v rail while the x-2 connect is SLI certified and has dual 12v rails. I just dont wanna take any chances since Im going to be running a dual 7800GT SLI system with an OC"d Opteron 170. As far as the Hipers go, Ive also considered those too but the sleeving on the cables looks cheap as hell. I mean, you can see the wires right through the mesh. So Hiper ain't gonna happen. Originally I considered the Turbine Power 550w from AeroCool but lots of people on Newegg were saying that the fan went all to hell on theirs and started rubbing really bad. So it looks like the hunt continues I guess. | |

| I haven't actually handled the Ultra Flex Force cables. I'd like to see them in the flesh. The original Ultra X-Connect cables were a bit stiff though. That's why the Flex-Force was developed. I had some problems conforming them to the routes I wanted, so I dipped them in hot water (being careful to keep the ends dry) so I could bend them the way I wanted and hold them that way until they cooled. It was a pain but it worked. But then again, I'm not running SLI at the moment, so I didn't have your concerns. The Hiper sleeving isn't that bad overall, but If you really look, you could see the wires a bit.... You could always re-sleeve. (or over-sleeve? Yep, more stuff to do.) Maybe someone else will come along with another recommendation. Or, you may just have some work to do. Sometimes, if you want things a certain way, that's the only course of action. Fill us in on what you find. | ||

| the force flex cables are like silicone speaker wire. if youve experienced the flexibility of high strand silicone jacket wire you know how bendy and noodle like they are. for modular cables you can now buy the cables at stores or order them or you can build your own. since i was one of the people who made a modular supply before you could buy one i always made my own cables. if you can id go to the store and look at the different powersupplies that are now avalible. personally i think the all these new shiny PSUs are a little too gaudy and straddle the lines of practical and just looking cool. when you can pick up the thing and look at it it can often change your expectatios | ||

| Apex Techie Wannabe | Im pretty confident that the x-2 connect will be a good choice. Im pretty anal when it comes to wire management so I thing the force flex cables will work out better in the end. With the sleeved and plastic coated wire, management might become an issue. I looked at the modular DIY kits but none of them support dual PCI-E. I know it might not make much difference but want a dedicated lead for each PCI-E card in my SLI setup. Plus none of them have SATA power. I think using adapters with molex connectors is lame. At over 3 grand for this new setup including the monitor I wanna make sure everything is perfect. | |
