flip-up cd-rom prototype

ive been working with an old 4x cd rom that so far it seems like it should work as a flip-up cd-rom like a discman. It actually opens up fine but i was wondering if it would be safe to test it as the laser an such, would the laser be on even without a cd????

i think he means to ask if you can modd a cd rom drivedo that the loading components work as a diskman

ie to open the drive the top of your case opens and u pop the cd in and it loads and its not a tray you just press a button the top goes up and u load a cd like a diskman.

Remember to load like a diskman so u press a button and the top opens. that is ther mod i think he is talking about. i should think so i thought about it too

I think he's asking if the laser in the CD drive is always on, even if there's no CD in the drive. I don't think the laser gets turned on until the drive is being accessed, with a CD in the drive. The only time I hear a CD drive begin to spin is when a disk is in the drive. That's my educated guess, anyway.
