Default The dremel.

Not sure if this is the right forum fo this, so sorry if it isnt ;(

Anyways, what I was wondering was: is the dremel good?
Now let me explain. I went into this "Lowes" of Austria yesterday(I moved to austria a few months ago), and saw several different dremels.
All of them basically had same functions etc... The only difference was the price. Now what im wondering is.... which one is good? Obviously the one for 115 euros(with like 40 parts) is gonna be better than the one for 50euros and 15 parts. The # of parts wasnt the only difference though, the tool looked different(Even though they both were dremels)

I really didnt know if the one for 50 was gonna be good enough to cut a blowhole/window into a case or not(steel case)
I wanted to see if any of you know a lot about the dremel to see if the cheap one is good ENOUGH to do so.

I DO have the money to buy the one for 115+, but I dont have enough money to throw it away on something I wont really need. I can picture using the dremel on my case, and then once a month if not less in daily household(non-case)

So basically to sum it all up: Do you think the one for 50(was basically just black except for the dremel sticker/logo) is good enough for my needs? I dont wanna save on the wrong tool if it's gonna break or something, but I dont wanna spend 50euros extra just for something I dont need.

How the freak did my post get so long about a dremel sorry!

The one im talking about looks like that, but doesnt have variable speed I dont think.

It's strange, I cant find the exact one on the internet so far. Been searching :/

I do know it was called 'Dremel Starter Kit' at the store.

Some thoughts for you pils -

1- don't be tempted by the number of bits you get with a dremel - just get the tool & buy the bits you actually need (like reinforced cutting wheels) seperately. Chances are you'll never use a lot of extra bits, making them a false economy;

2- get a mains powered model rather than a cordless one - the cordless ones are gutless in comparison;

3 - rated wattage, rpm & number of speed settings are all important - the higher the better on all counts

4- I own a dremel, but frankly I don't rate it - people (not least the manufacturers) get into a masturbatory frenzy about how great they are - but frankly, the number of times it's the right tool for the job are very low. Cutting holes in a case (unless the cuts are really intricate) is not one of them - consider a jigsaw instead.

I'll finish on a "poem":

Dremels are a groovy thing
at several thousand revs they sing
but at cutting holes they're rather poor
so do the right thing
and buy a jigsaw

Hrm, thanks.
But how come in so many "how to's" I read, they RARELy use jigsaw and usually use the dremel(for example a 80m blowhole on the top of the case)

The thing that i like about the dremel is that you can do so many other things with it. If I buy a jigsaw.... I can cut a hole in the case and then I wont really need it for anthing else ;(
So since I can use it for more than that... I was wondering if it can also get the job done on a blowhole. I mean obviously it can, becuase people have done it. Was just wondering if the cheap ones will do it too

And about the wattage/rpm/speeds/etc. - the more expensive ones will obviously have a higher # of this. But I dont wanna buy a real expensive one! ;X

Once again, thanks for the info

Get a holesaw for blowholes you will be happier with the results. I will say that I love my dremel theres something about 3k rpm and sparks.

You can get a 3" which is about 80mm for $15 at Lowes I am sure someone you know has a drill. Try cutting out a perfect circle with a dremel your first time it wont be good. If you do try it make a jig.

EDIT: Yes its the circle thing for a drill. The cheaper ones are one piece. Make sure its for metal.

More thoughts Pils - dremels are expensive - a 50 euro one sounds too cheap to be any good.

For 115 euros (the cost of the expensive one you mentioned), you could get a drill, HSS drill bits, the holesaw mirage mentioned, _and_ a jigsaw, and probably a multimeter too. These are much more useful as the basis of a modding tool kit than a dremel on its own.
"Ferm" and "Power Devil" are the brands to look out for - they're cheap, but pretty good quality considering the price.

I'm _pretty_ sure that there's no such thing as Ferm and Power Devil here in Austria

Oh, and the cheapest holesaw's ive seen are 23.99euros.
I'm in austria buddy, things arent as cheap as in the US Sucks. It's also rather hard to get modding stuff for case. I've searched and searched on google and just comp sites, they dont even have that cable sleeve stuff. (they do have heatshrink, but not the cable sleeves)

I wanna move back to US ;(

I have a drill btw, so that's not a problem.
Jon the prong, my name is pilsl btw
Oh, and what is a HSS drill bit?

Once again, thanks for all the imput, I feel like such a noob!

Shame ... I found a good value jigsaw for you ...

... things arent as cheap as in the US

Tell me about it ... 1 USD = 1GBP, & I nearly fainted at the price of stuff when I last went to Germany

... It's also rather hard to get modding stuff for case

A couple of links for you: http://www.woolies-trim.co.uk/ rubber mouldings (for windows, etc), handles; & http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.co.uk/ cable, sleeving, switches, etc .. both are in UK but will export - might be worth looking at.

Jon the prong, my name is pilsl btw

So I abbreviated it

Oh, and what is a HSS drill bit?

HSS = High Speed Steel - like these

I'll give you some feedback from Europe. The expensive dremel with 40 parts i think has also a small display that shows rpm. Pretty funcy, ha? But not enough to make you buy it though ...

I bought some months ago, one with 15 parts which costed 80€, and works fine. Now, 50€ dremel with 15 parts in Austria (which is slightly more expensive than Greece)? Naaah....! It doesn't click. Except if it's a sold-out or something.

Better see what are you looking for. Dremel does pretty much everything but with a minor detail. It is slow. So you must be a patient man. But if you end up to a dremel, hear what Jon says, see the specs of the tool and decide which one.

Auf viedersehen

wow, once again, thanks for all the help I really appreciate it!

Btw jon, pils is a beer here in europe(at least in germany/austria)! Maybe you've heard of it. Maybe they even have it in US... who knows!

skyfaller - It was a "dremmel starter kit". It didnt have speed variable thing, but it looked like a regular dremel(and was a dremel)
Obviously it's gonna be worse than the more expensive... I wish I could find a spec sheet or something for it and show you guys :/

Oh, and it's Wiedersehen almost!

I'm starting to like my case. Even though it's a premod(The side panel window, DONT FLAME .. didnt have the time nor tools to make it myself! hehe). Right now I have a red and yellow CCFL in it. I also have a 3 color fan in the middle of the window(also premod), and 3 more of them coming (which I will put in the back). I bought a "mirror" flexible thing which sticks, I put that on the bottom of the case. Oh, I also painted hte inside of my case yellow(and some parts on the back outside black). Rounded cables... A LOT of wire hiding(behind mobo backplate or whatever it's called).

As I said, still getting 3 more LED fans(3 color, or actually 4 color I think), cable sleeving in carbon look for the wires that you do see(which are like 2.. lol)
Stealthed CD drive, and put a radiator sign(which I also have as fangrill on the side window fan) in that "mirror" thing under the 2 bay covers. Hard to explain.

Once I get the other fans and cable sleeves I'll take a few pictures of it
Even though its a premod I really like it, and I guess that's all that modding is about: Making a computer that you like
So basically now that I have the time(and trying to get the tools as you noticed), I wanna put a top blowhole.

I'm also currently working on the 2 bay covers(where the radiatior logo/sign is). I wanna "hinge" it so that you can open them and behind it have whatever(since they are both empty bays). I'm thinking about putting a 2nd panel behind it with switches for the ccfl's.

Trying to make it rather unique even though it's a premod. Havent seen many cases with yellow/red light. If I'm honest I don tthink ive seen any with that combo.
