Firstly, apologies if this is in the wrong section... not quite sure where i should post this.
Ok... i'm havig some major problem!
I recently took my rig apart to install 2 120mm fans in the top of the case, one of which was a mod to the
PSU, venting straight out the top. This required dismantling the
PSU and basically turning all the internal compontents upside down. All went well, i re-assembled my computer and switched back on. Everything seemed to be going fine.
After a couple of hours (or a couple of minutes intensive) use the computer becomes completely unstable. It doesnt hang or go to blue screen but instead resets. From there it is hit or miss whether it will restart again or just hang on a black screen with the
CPU and
VGA fans spinning away. Once it has happened the computer is more or less unusable as it will last no mroe than 5 minutes before resetting again.
My first instinct was to get rid of all overclocks. My P4 3.06 was at 3.45 so that went straight back to stock, and my 6600GT AGP from 570/1.15 down to 550/1.1. Still happened.
My big fear is that its something to do with the
PSU (cant really afford a new one... and a new
PSU would leave a 120mm hole in the top of my case... not ideal...) Ive been running without any lights / extra fans etc to see if it was overloading (its a 420W generic unit) but it still cuts out so dont think thats the problem.
Ive currently got both side panels off and every non-essential wire disconnected from the
PSU and seems to be holding (7mins and counting) so it may be something was shorting out, but surely that would either be shorting out or not.... not happening sometimes and then not happening other times.
Anyways... if anybody has actully read through all that your input would be greatly appreciated.
Adios
Mark
