![]() | Hello everyone! I am attempting to do my first mod (A 80MM case fan hole in my Lain Lan case). I bought a 82MM Bi-Metal holesaw at Ace Hardware, and after reading a few other forums I think I should have gotten a smaller one not a bigger one and I already opened it. So my question is did I mess up and waste $16.00 or will it work? I don't have much more money to spend so I figured if it didn't work I could put my 92MM fan into the hole if the 80MM fan won't work. Thanks in advance. |

| Apex Tech Maniac | First off, welcome to PimpRig! Thrasher2 will be along shortly with his welcome message. I would recommend printing off an 80 mm Fan template (you can find one here, as well as instructions on making blowholes) and checking to see if the fan mounting screws will still be outside of the hole you've cut. If not, then it looks like it's time for a larger fan!

| Eleven-Bravo Sitrep Writer | First off, welcome to PR. You've come to the right place... Secondly, allow me to laugh and point at you for just a sec. ![]() There, now that that is out of the way, the answer to your question is both yes and no. (I did this before myself, just so you know...) Yes, you should have bought a smaller bore holesaw. No, you did not waste the money... You can still use it, and the fan will work, but you will have some space around the edges of the hole you cut. Or, like you said, you can use a 92mm fan in that space... Advice for next time: measure twice, buy once... Measure the inner diameter of the fan(s) you're looking to cut a hole for, and take the measurement with you. Find the closest holesaw diameter without exceeding the measurement, and you're golden. The extra mm or two will allow you to file/sand down the edges from razor-sharp to comfortably smooth... EDIT: As far as the templates go, I have used them in the past and loved the outcome. HOWEVER, make sure you compare them to the fan itself before you commit to cutting. Sometimes the templates print out a little bigger or smaller than the actual fan size. I had to reduce the templates to something like 74% on my computer so they (all three sizes) would come out in the correct size...

You ol' mean-ass!Nah, Grandpa is right on the money. And I never look at tools as a waste of money, unless it's some really crazy stuff you'll only use once. With a holesaw, chances are you'll need one later, so consider it planning ahead.

Ok, so the wicked side of my twisted sense of humor came out there, but notice that I did admit to having screwed up doing the exact same thing in the past. Hence, I spake from experience...

Hahahah..you and me both. Nothing like buying a square peg for a round hole. I'm sure we've all done something like that at one point or another.

| Eleven-Bravo Sitrep Writer | Wouldn't that depend on how thick of trim you could find for it, though? Then, would adding the trim to cover the gaps still fit aesthetically with the case? Not trying to aggravate the issue, these are just things that I think about...

![]() I was searching for some info...hahahahahah If you want to do the same, then here are some hole saw sizes to look for: 40mm = 1.57", so use a 1.5" hole saw or a wood boring bit 50mm = 1.97", so a 2" hole saw is perfect 60mm = 2.36", so look for something close to that, then plan to file a little 80mm = 3.15", so a 3" hole saw will work perfectly 92mm = 3.5" 120mm = 4.72", so look for a 4.5" and file a little

I just got this mental picture of Necro standing over a mutilated case holding a chainsaw

I think he hacked his with a blow torch hahahaha That was before he used the truck hitch mounting bolts to hold the damn thing on the side panel. ![]() Also as was said to you already. Measure twice , cut once. your LIAN LI case wasn't cheap. Don't screw it all up by not showing a little precaution... I use a 76mm Hole Saw for my 80mm fans....You can also use 3" Hole Saw. They sell those at most Home Depot / Lowes stores. As long as you haven't used the bit you can take it back and exchange for a new size...Just tell them you got the wrong one. Alas also you could use door edge molding was mentioned earlier for the bigger hole. Lastly... Don't forget to remove your hardware before cutting a hole...You would be surprised how many dont. And how many kill their gear not thinking. Digi.
