Default fossilized components?

ok, i have sitting on my desk ready to be hooked up an approximately 8-9 year old fan from a 486 that i rescued from the dupster at work, and i was wondering if it's a good idea to hook it up? it's rated for 12V (the red wire, i finally figured that out after i fried another 5$ LED...)

also, i was wondering if there was any way of slowing it down to about .5 hz? (i kinda wanted to put a light behind it to give it that kind of giant industrial fan effect...)

Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but the +12V coming out of the PSU is almost always a yellow wire.

The easiest way to slow down a fan is to give it less voltage. You can experiment with putting resistors inline or just using a potentiometer for variable resistance. One trick is to use seven volts, which you accomplish by hooking the +12V to the positive lead of the fan and the +5V to the negative lead of the fan.

I'm wondering why the dude won't shell out the minimal dollars to get a new fan.

you can rip open the fan and throw in a rc airplane brushless motor controller. any speed you want. basic stamp pwm out might also work on each coil. you will also need field effect sens to give the basic stamp a position feed back. all in all it would be $100 on some crappy fan. regular motor and a taymia gear box or a rc hobby servo taken apart. drive it with a belt. there nice slow rotation. next time dont say .5 hz say 30 rpm

lol, yeah, sorry, i'm used to saying hz, cause my physics teacher pretty much just finished hammering it into my class's heads to say hz, not rpm in the unit that we were doing that stuff in :p
