Default Plexi or Lexan? Dremel or Saber Saw?

Quite a newbie question... I thought plexiglass was what to use, but a friend of mine told me that he used lexan... I do remember though that one of them was better at handling heat. I plan on putting one into my old 133's case, but I need something very thin to go over the power adapter, which is mounted to very close to the top of the case, I figure eather 1/8th or 1/16th inch.

Another friend also suggested using a Saber Saw, though I've only ever heard of a dremel for case modding, but again, I'm new to all of this.

Cool

Amatsu,
The key is to use what you have, but do it with care.
We all use Dremel 'cause of it's flexibility in uses and range of motion.
If a Sabre saw is what you have, use it.
Make sure you have a good blade and dont force it to cut faster than it wants to, have patience.

Yes, use Lexan

Plexi is deffinately the most common, but lexan probably will work better for you. As for a dremel, don't think there is really anything wrong with it because there isnt, it works great, and its very cost effective. But if you happen to have access to any nicer tools don't be afraid to use them.

while we are on the subject of dremels, i had a dremel related question. whats the best attachment for cutting with a dremel, because the current one i am using it takes upwards of 20 min to cut a simple 80mm hole. any suggestions

BTW- i have a 7000-15000rpm cordless multipro.

If you want the best, then go with the wheel coated with tungsten carbide grit. A # 542 cutting/shaping wheel.

EDIT- on the website it says -DO NOT USE ON METEL?????

What about this one?

Diamond wheel #545

Scape,
I thought you wanted it for Plexi, for steel that is another story.

A tungston bit is too expensive for you, but you want to go to a diamond bit? You stated best, not cheapest.

You want good, but inexpensive. OK. Then go with the fiberglass reinforced bit #456, comes in a 10 pack.

You could always use what I use and get through whatever you want, in a matter of minutes.

i've been using the fiberglass bits recently, and i like them, but they seem to take a while to get through, and i've found out the hard way that they don't like being turned in mid-cut (i heard a snap and saw a small black blur go flying off to god-knows-where... )

you think the fiberglass reinforced ones break easy...try the un-reinforced ones! They are downright deadly!

you could cut with the saber saw with a metal bit that use the dremel to shape. lexan is polycarbonate and is what bullet proof glass is. both are plastics that will easily scratch. lexan will dull a blade fast. trust the rc car modeler on that. but lexan will be hard to shatter and if you have a quartar inch of it it should stop small hand gun fire (9mm fire)
angle grinder its like a giant dremel cutting wheel

i have the firt attachment that the birdman posted and i love it.

as for deadly projectile attachemnts.. my first use of the dremel was to try to cut a 1/2" piece of lexan with the standard cuttingwheels. i literally went through about 1 every 2" or straight line cut. i decided to fvck the curves and just file them out later but an, ever 2" or so the thing would shatter and fly wherever it felt like going.. more then once that was directly at my face. i soon learned to wear sunglasses...

note to n00bs: always wear eye protection (). flying globs of melted plastic are NOT fun to get in your eyes... and the shrapnel from the broken wheels are even less I would immagine...

Ah ha ha ha how much did half inch thick lexan cost? its called a table saw. Lucite is acrylic. Wait why are we wasting our money on super strong stuff when standard plexi or 1/8 inch lexan is what you need? Can you say over kill? if its just a window you donÂ’t need bullet stopping power but if its a structural part of your project then you need the strong stuff.

Lexan is some cool stuff. We went backpacking once with some lexan silverware and spent the entire two weeks trying to break it by bending it in half repeatedly without suceeding.

Gee, all I did on my last backpacking trip was to go rapelling at 4am drunk off my ass at an illiegal site in the red river gorge( A couple people die there every year). Being the smart guys we were, we let the drunkest guy there set up the ropes. apparently, he get's paranoid when he's drunk. When we got up the next morning, he'd secured the rope to 4 different trees ;-) Also, as a note, it's is NOT a good idea to sleep in a hammock in shorts and a tshirt, not only do you freeze your ass off, but you look like an extra from a hellraiser movie in the morning. Ah, the glory days of college......
