Default The Mystery Machine...

Hello... It's nice to finally make it to this forum.. Very busy in my schedule lately... Lots of stuff going on!!
But I thought I would share my computer I made for my kids.. If any of you picked up the April issue of Max Pc, then you already saw it, as Rig of the Month, but I also got BAWLS hotmod ofr January!!

Here is one of the sources for my 'inspiration' and ideas:

As you can see I left my cigs in for scale to show what I was working with......

Next the supplies I got from Lowe's and Michael's Crafts:

Paint, Plexi-Glass for windows,Bondo,Paint Brushes, and "tires" (will be explained below)

Thankfully, Michaels' had the exact colors I needed for detail work, The Base Blue is not pictured, it is 'rattle-can' from Lowe's. And a can of Red from 'Family Dollar' from another project for inside of case. Also used various grits of sandpaper from 80 up to 400. And I have a can of Clear/Hardcoat finish for the end.

First this is what I started with, I didn't take 'real' before shots, but you can get the idea..

I actually filled the floppy drive, led holes, power and 'case badge' holes with hot-melt, to fill the space...

Ok for the Tires... I really could not find a 'pre-mod' tire so I had to come up with something, after searching, I found something I could use to make tires with..

.

Yep...Xmas ornaments from Michaels, on sale 29 cents each.. I will be using 2 for each tire, glued together for the thinkness/strength, of course I had to dismantle them ,and remove the 'hangers'

Easy work for the 'dremel'..... Next was to glue them together, and start Bondo work

Case front and tires with fresh Bondo applied, after sanding, I used wood filler to fill in any imperfections, as I did not want to make a new batch of Bondo for such small details.....Next comes primer...The Paint them..

Look like Hockey Pucks huh?? Put them aside to dry, and then sand and another coat etc. While they are drying it is time to start the case.First I painted inside of case with Red, Like interior of Mystery Machine..

Yeah I know I should have taken the tag off, but I really wasn't concerned with that part of case, the only part you will see though the window is the drive-bay area.... Next I painted the Rear of the case (blue)

Next was to start 'dremel' work..I needed a way to create the illusion of lines, hinges, etc... So I went with engraving them into the case, so they will have an actual depth to them, instead of just painting them on... and I cut out the windows..

The above pics were before sanding edges etc.. I actually went over the grooves, with a grinder bit to smooth them and make them a little deeper...Next was the door, more 'dremel' work!!

Creating the door posed a major problem with Hinge configuration, and having it close back to where it met the case, I thought of using a regular hing, but I figured the thinkness of it would impede closing and leave a gap in front of case, so I decided to go with a 'hidden' hinge, which is actually from an old bi-fold door I removed from my house during remodeling, I guess it is a good thing I save everything huh??

Had to drill new holes of course.....and here is with the hinge attached to case, after I tried a couple of configurations of course...

And here it is finally assembled and working properly!!!!!! (after about two hours of screwing with it to get it right)

Need a little tweaking but you get the idea.....Well it is time to paint the case, so while that is drying it is back to the tires, for some detail work....

That is just the first coat of 'hubcap' and 'wheel cover', yep there are five tires, one is on the front, in a cover or case I assume....

First Coat on Case

Tires with center Painted:

Almost final coat on case... I wet sanded this with 3m claybar, and just applied a final light finish coat of paint it is drying now...

and while that is drying I finished the tires with paint, they are drying now, and then I will be clear coating them next, and starting the 'graphics' on the side of case.....

Remember this is supposed to be 'cartoony' 70's style, not PERFECT......... I hand painted the colors on the tires and will be hand painiting the designs on the 'van', I went with doing it by hand as opposed to template and spraying, for a more 'authentic' less perfect look.... (and look a free plug for at&t/cingular!, i don't mind that is what I have)

AND the Finished Tires!!!!!!4 coats of clear coat............ that should keep them from getting destroyed (at least for a few days!!)

And the second coat of the 'sign' I guess that's what it would be called.....Yes paint is still wet.... just did it...

Now got the cd -rom drive ready, painted/clear coated bezel... de-soldered switch, soldered wires, then re-soldered switch

Got the front of case sort of ready, got 'windshield' cut out and headlight and running lights.....Also got the Head lights prepared....

And got the Logo painted on one side..... (took quite a while)

Ok, first the Bumpers... I used smal firing strips... the front bumper was actually three pieces, and the rear one piece...
Had to sand, shape, fill, sand again, then primer, then paint then clearcoat.....
Here are the finished pieces!

I got the front almost complete... finished painting, got the clear coat on also, installed the lights and switches(power and cd eject) and the leds......
I stll need to put the bumper on and the detail on the headlights (silver circle thing)

The door is actually completed painted and clearcoated......I included 3 pics to show the clear coat...

And here are the left and right sides almost fully complete, well the left side (door) needs only clearcoat, the right still needs a little detail and clearcoat....

OK... Here we go... Clear coated and put together...somewhat......
You can see I got the bumpers attached, and the license plate made!!
Cleaned up my wires a bit also.Got the tires attached (hot-melt and Weldbond!)

OK, I've been busy......Went to Toys r' Us and bought 'The Gang'

And then I had to do some alterations to them to make them fit right......OUCH!

And I got them in Finally, Yes Fred does have a steering wheel, but you really can't see it in this pic, I will post better pics when all done, and the window is clean!! I had to change my plan about the front windshield a bit... I was going to have it slide out with the cd tray, but it just was not going to work, as Scooby's nose and Daphne's breasts stuck out a little to far, and it would have been on a slant to much... So I opted to make the windshield two pieces, a small piece that slide out with the cd tray and the rest is permanantly attached......The Left headlight is the power switch and the right is the cd-eject button.... there are leds behind them.

Ok pic is of the bottom, I had to add 'struts' for support, as the wheel are attached to the case, and the weight actually made the chassis fall out of case!!!!!I had some extra Oak trim lying around and used that!!

The next are some various shots at different angles...

The Next set is Interior shots!

These would be with with lights dim and out to show the leds and the led fan...

And finally the cd tray shots......

Final Thoughts: This was a fun project!! I am installing the os now and then I will install the games for my kids, and of course, Scooby Doo Wallpaper!!
Oh and I guess I forgot to post above the specs on the system:
Intel Celeron 500mhz (nothing special, just for 3-4 yr olds)
Intel ca810 MOBO
Onboard video
cd-rom drive (old)
Yep this was a trip to do, it took 16 days to complete, 4 of those days were approx 12 hours straight of work (off work) and the rest were about 4-5 hours each day, so I have over 100 hours into this thing!! And all for my kids!! (let the fighting begin)

'Nuff Said!

Ok and of course I have to add, the actual pics of them seeing it finished!!!
And some pics of setup for them..... (it works for now, till I get them a 'real' desk)

AND a picture of their 'Workstation'

Nuff' Said

I love a mod with a sense of humor. And the execution/consistency of your theme is amazing. I love the door and the windshield!
