its more than possible, but it wont be like a BOOOOM explode.... just a pop.... it would be the cathode rupturing.... there is a gas in the tube ;-) hope that helps

I have never heard of the cathode itself exploding. However, i have heard of the inverters in real cheap kits going bad and "blowing", but its only a small part, a cap or a very small transformer that'll go bad, and i've never heard of it destroying anything but the inverter.

Well, they are similar to the tubes used in ceiliing lighting, and I do have experience with one of those exploding. Couple of us accidently knocked one over in high school, when it hit the ground FWOOSH we're both showered with tiny glass bits. Fortunately we'd both covered our eyes in time, and the bits weren't fast enough to do anything. So... the ones used in computer modding tend to be sturdier, and even if one did go I doubt it'd do anything to your hardware beyond making you clean it out. Good thing glass isn't conductive.

Cathodes are safe and fine these days I'v yet to have one burn out on me and I'v had them for 3 years. So I'd say they are good and safe.

As a matter of interest, has anyone ever put a CCFL in a microwave?

Jonny, there's an entire website devoted to putting various items in microwaves. Apparently your everyday average grocery store egg yields surprising results! Disclaimer: Do your research before you do anything I say. I will not be held responsible for any bodily harm that comes to you.

Fun with Microwaves

Cathodes should be fine but LEDs are also great. LED-lifetime & small, Cathodes - big & bright

Even if the cold cathode did happen to explode, there is a fairly thick plastic tube that the cathode fits into. This should prevent any damage.

Though i have to admit, i've never heard of such an explosion.

-LEDs explode quite nicely when you give 'em too much voltage. Better be wearing eye protection!

I run a couple cats in my rig and have never had any trouble with them. I don't keep mine on all the time though. I switch them on at night when I am playing or when I want to show off my PC.
