Exclamation Going INSANE Front Panel connector problems???!

If this is heated, I appologize... I'm about ready to put a gun to my effing head.

I built a system for my girlfriend recently with an X-Super Alien case. It's sporting a 3 ghz P4 (LGA775) on an Intel 915GEV board. Initially it worked great, but was running hot. Today we got our big fat Thermal Take TC112 heatsink. Installing it was a headache I hadn't anticipated. In case you don't know, you have to take the mobo out to install it. Anyway...

A few hours later I'm done. I plug it in, turn the PSU on and it powers on. At this point I realized I had probably not connected the power on/off button properly. It booted up nevertheless. After Windows loads, it runs for a bit, then freezes.. Weird. Ok. So I power down.

I download the mobo manual from Intel to fix the wiring problem. I plug in all the connectors that I can (apparently the 915GEV and the case wires don't all match up) and power it on again. It powers up, but this time the monitor wont come on... I switch the monitor to the onboard video port.... still nothing. When I turn the monitor off and then on, there's a "No sync input" display.

Figured the videocard (Radeon X700XT PCIEx) might have been knocked loose somehow. Nope. So I spend the next several hours reading every word and trying every single wire configuration I can think of. Nope.

The onboard speaker makes no beeps when i power on. The RAM lights up like it's doing a memory test. I'm baffled. Any suggestions? Anyone?? I'm thinking this has to have something to do with the wiring in the front. You know how it is though, when you've been staring at a problem so long....the solution might be right in front of your nose and you can't even see it because you're looking to hard.

I dont think its related to your front panel connections but if you want to easily check that off your list do the following.

Connect only the wires for the power switch - the others really arent "needed" and the computer will function without them. The power switch will work no matter which way its pluged in so that will not be a problem either - if your PC works great now then add one wire at a time till you either find the offending connection or get all working A1.

EDIT: Check and make sure your 4 power connector is pluged into the mobo and your newly installed CPU fan is also connected to the CPU fan header on the mobo.

You can also reset the BIOS. Refer to your manual but usually just look for a cmos reset jumper or pop the battery out for a few minutes.

Sorry... I'm confused. What is the "4" power connector? You mean the smaller of the two PSU cables? Yes the CPU fan header is mounted. Thanx for your input.

I'm pretty sure that you did not correctly install the heatsink, or did not connect the fan to the onboard header.
It should take no more than a few minutes, not hours. BTW, ThermalTake does not make a "TC112".

Christ.... it's a Tower112 give me a break. I didn't have the friggin box in front of me. No one likes a post nazi.

I'm postive I installed the heatsink correctly. As for the time it took.... Have you installed one of these things???? Obviously not. I'm not talking a normal open the case, take off old heatsink, remove old grease, apply new grease, pop on heatsink. YOU HAVE TO TAKE THE WHOLE MOTHERBOARD OUT.
Which, last I checked, means taking the whole computer apart. If you can re-assemble a computer in "a few minutes" you've got WAY too much time on your hands.

No, I just run a renowned and respected Custom PC shop and do it for a living. It's second nature.
I've installed hundreds of bolt-mount heatsinks requiring removal of the motherboard to install. Cake.

It's easy and can be done under ten minutes, and that's taking your time. The reason the system is shutting
down is because it is either overheating or being reported that there is no fan connected to the header.
Another possibility is that you installed the heatsink incorrectly and it is grounding out the board.

And just who do you think you are, calling me a nazi?

I had a similar probelm (it was with a socket 478 though). It turned out that my mobo was fried. I can only suggest you start from thr begining and remove everything from the case, plug in only what is necessary for a post and work from there.

BTW I would suggest some respect is given to Texoid. You are a new member and I don't know if you have seen the valuable information and advice that has been posted previously by Tekxoid in the past. You also have no right to come here and call one of the most respected members a nazi within your first 4 posts!

Welcom to PR

Yeah.... Well bud, I DON'T work at a "renowned and respected Custom PC shop". I do this in my spare time.

Yes. I am calling you a post nazi. And who do I think I am?? A guy that's had it up to here with the self-declared "L33t" that go around HELP forums posting condescending replies to "n00bs". I may not be a professional in this arena, but that hardly makes me an idiot. It's obnoxious because you obviously didn't read my previous posts, stating that i am 100% sure i have installed the heat sink properly. Yes the CPU fan is connected to the right headers. Instead, guys like you decide to point out the fact that I call the heatsink a TC112 when the technical name for it is a Tower 112, for example.

Thanks for not responding in a mature and sensible manner, I have no reason to assist someone like you.

See ya, I hope you have shocking experience with your power supply.

Both of you knock it off, you're both being immature, especially you TekX. That's not how we treat new members. Play nice.

You may have but your still showing fairly bad form when posting on a new forum. You can drop the bad attitude now and become a helpful, respected member of this forum.......or you can continue to be an ill mannered scrot bag. The choice ultimately is yours.

On your problem: Take it down to the basics (as stated before). If it wont post with just the basics you need to use process of elimination. Do you have another rig to test the video card, memory and such in??? I would check the video card first, then memory.......but take a hard look at what you messed with directly.
