Default Fun with Bondo..

A few nights ago when I was covering all of lovely holes on my front bezel with bondo, i had an idea to mount fans. I figured it would work if you could get the fan to stay held against whatever you are mounting in on, You could make a bondo Rivet of sorts.. If you had the holes for where the screws would go, you could just force the bondo through and through the fans screw holes and smash down the bondo that comes out through the fan holes.

Anyone have any ideas if that would work? It would be a screwless way of mounting your fans, no screws, no ugly ass metal things poking out everywhere.

I'm sure it's possible. I haven't worked with Bondo, but I assume you would just have to make sure the fan stays in place until the Bondo dries.

This solution sounds feasable. For a little while atleast. The torque that your fan will exert on the bondo when it starts up, will eventually take its toll on the bondo. I am not sure how long it will be before this becomes a problem. Could be years, could be days. I say you should try it and report back on how well it works.

That's kind of a messy solution, no? Perhaps a better idea would be using pop rivets. They lay flush with the surface and can be drilled out without much effort.

yes bondo would eventualy crack but if you used fiberglass bondo sometimes call kitty or monkey hair it would be alot stronger and last longer. if you go to your local auto supply store like nappa it would be called
fiberhair

you can also make it using
.bondo
.chopped or powder fiberglass
.fiberglass resign
.bondo activator
on a piece of wax paper taped down tight on a flat surface mix the amount your going to use in bondo about 1/3 that amount in
chopped or powder fiberglass, resign and activator according to ammount used, mix very well. you can put in more or less fiberglass to match the texture you want.
WHEN IT FULLY DRYS ITS ROCK HARD SO GET A HEAD START ON SANDING BY USING A CHEESE GRATOR WHEN ITS NOT FULLY DRY, WHEN ITS FIRM BUT NOT HARD. IT MAKES ALOT OF DUST.

I dunno, Bondo is some pretty stout stuff. I mess with bondo a lot, just about everything I own has Bondo on it somewhere, I've even fixed my TV Remote with it .

I'm pretty sure if I did it right I wouldn't have a problem with it, I came up with a revised plan for it though, instead of using it like rivets, use it like a brace. Like pile it up on the corners of the fan and spread it so it encases the corner and it is touching and bonding to the case. And once you do that on all four corners, I'm pretty sure it would outlast the case.

My idea was that, instead of a rivet type bondo thing.

I will do it and get back to everyone and tell how it holds and how well it worked. I imagine it should work pretty well.

Oh, and anyone have any ideas how to cover up my cutting mistakes when cutting a hole for a fan? I used a 3 3/4" hole saw to do it, but you know its almost impossible for it not to wiggle around and make the hole bigger than planned. I was thinking some modders mesh and make a guard, that way it would kinf of cover it, and I planned on meshing a lot of the front bezel anyway.

Or you could try Duraglass, most auto body supply stores have it, or similar. I picked some up at a local Murray's a few years back, right next to the Bondo

They have it here by the Gallon, a quart should be 10-15$ local.

BTW, Bondo has a tendancy to get brittle with age...

that would be an idea, but is it fiberglass resin?

Im guessing you would need to use a putty of some sort, like bondo, something thing that can be messed with like clay.
