| Howdy, Pimps and Pimpettes: I got ahold of an idea, but I don't have much time to try it out. If anyone out there is interested in possibly getting their case somewhat soundproofed for only the cost of me shipping this stuff to you, let me know... I work on a rifle range, and we get our ammo in large wooden crates. Inside the crates are the ammo cans, and surrounding the cans are some different sized pieces of what seems to be, for lack of a better term, "hardened foam". It's soft enough to cut easily with an X-acto knife, but firm enough to stay flat once it is put in place. There are two thicknesses, the thinnest is like 1/4" inch thick, the other is like 1/2", maybe (I grew up in the metric system, so I dunno for sure). The 1/4 stuff is black/silver-ish, and the 1/2 stuff is either black or silver-LIKE. If you've seen the filters that come in the front of a Lian Li PC75, you've kinda got something that looks like that, but the "cells" are much tighter together. Anyhoo, if anyone would like to give it a try and let us all know how it works out, please either post here or PM me, with the total dimensions you'll need to cover. BTW: the 1/4 material comes in sheets about 1/4 thick x 2-3ft long x 1.5-2 ft wide. the 1/2" stuff comes 1/2 thick x 6-8" long x 4-6" wide. I'll ship via the cheapest courier possible and give you the quote (pic of the receipt). I prefer PayPal, but we can deal with that later, after you get the package. EDIT: I'll probably be able to ship this out the end of next week, after a nice long week of work (bang, bang, bang!) I'll also ship about 15-20% more than what you ask for, just in case... Any takers? | ||

| It's supposed to absorb any sort of shock that the ammo/crate/cans might get hit with... Maybe I've lost my mind (AGAIN, YES!), but I figured that MAYBE shock-proofing in this case could equal sound-proofing? ![]() here are some pics... with a PC75 case as a size reference... (this is the 1/4 thick stuff) ![]() and holding it up with the ceiling light shining thru... ![]() Last edited by GrandpaNoob72; 04-December-04 at 12:01 AM.. | ||

| If I had the money Id definataly do it. I have a degree in Sound Engineering i.e. the guy in the recording studio who makes the bands you love sound good on disk. This course had an extensive accoustics (the way sound acts and reacts in all envoirnments) section attached to it..... my point is this: this material should work decently well because it is pourous, this will difuse the lower spectrum of sound frequencies quite well also cutting the high frequencies moderataly well also. If you can get enough to do a case for under 10 us dollars in shipping Id say your getting a pretty good deal. Also if the material is somewhat softer and can be molded your getting even better sound dampening. Nice Idea, and good looking out for the community! | ||

If you don't mind me asking, where did you go to school for this and how would you rate the program there? I have been contemplating going back to school for either sound or acoustical engineering for the past few years but haven't really started the research on it just yet.

I went to a local Minneapolis school called http://www.musictech.edu/recordingarts.html, the program there was great.... but they didnt have the most up to date computer controlled systems when I was there. I hear now theyve got mac G4 systems running the latest protools setups and they teach digital 5.1 and SSL enviornments. My only piece of advice is make sure your taking the program in a hands on setting using the latest protools and especially pay attention in the music business classes they have some very important information about networking within the music community. Skill will be important but not as important as who you know if you want to have a job at a major studio.

| Ok, I finally got the chance to test this stuff out this weekend and I was not all that surprised by the results. The thin sheets as far as sound dampening is concerned are next to useless. The thick sheets, on the other hand, did provide quite the audible decibel drop (don't have a db meter to check actual decrease) but while doing so insulated the case and provided for slightly higher temps overall for my rig. Two things to consider, IMHO, are this: If you have a window, sound-dampening material is pretty much useless anyway If you are running water this will work great, except see point one..... who has water and don't show it off? If you are looking for as quiet a case as possible and you didn't mind running water without a window then this stuff is perfect for you to line every inch of spare case siding with. For real world situations, it unfortunately wouldn't hold up as a viable solution though, IMO. In my case though, (and yes, I am not exactly considered "the norm") I did find an excellent use for it. I used the thick sheets to line the interior of one of my SCSI HDD array cases and they are super quiet now (should be even more quiet when I mod a 120mm fan to where the 80mm is now in the rear of the case. | ||

| Well, shucks! Sorry it turned around and bit ya in the butt, gf, but then again, it did help ya in a small way... Maybe not the best stuff for sound dampening, but I thought it would be worth the shot... Keep the shipping costs, gf, this one's on me. (Anyone else want some, you're gonna pay... ) | ||

| Apex Advanced Techie | Well i have both my side panels completely filled w/windows and i used normal old egg crates for sound dampening. But not for case. I built air duct system for my processor. Tornado. I CANT HEAR YOU!!!! going to a 120mm fan that pushing 120cfm. Then lined inside and outside of it with egg crates. Then coverd the outside with some brushed aluminum to match the case. The sound from my fan is next to half what it used to be. So there is still a use for maybe something like that. | |

| Just an update on the foam sheet sizes: Actually got off my butt and measured the sheet sizes for this stuff... "Small&Thin Foam Sheet" is .25" thick x 6.25" wide x 10.75" long "Big&Thin Foam Sheet" is .25" thick x 10.75" wide x 16&14/16" long "Small&Thick Foam Sheet" is .5" thick x 5" wide x 11.25" long Have one request pending to SpikeShot, if there are any other takers (you pay shipping only), PM me with your shipping info, AND how many sheets of what size you'll be wanting. Remember to add about 10-20% overage for any possible mistakes... Last edited by GrandpaNoob72; 09-January-05 at 12:52 AM.. Reason: So DW can get his mind out of the gutter | ||

| Ok, SpikeShot's request has been sent, and it pretty much wiped me out. Not for him asking for so much, I just couldn't find a box the right size... When I did find a box that would hold it all, there was so much space left over that I went ahead and sent him some more sheets, as: 1) extra filler, and 2) "Just-in-case". Bottom line, I still have some of the small/thick sheets, but most of them are a greyish olive color, so bear with me... Spike, when you get a chance, let us all know how things went for you. If it all comes out good for ya, I'll keep updating this thread for the benefit (?) of any/all PR members interested. If not, I'll just let it fall off the thread tree to wither and die... | ||
