Get some bondo, fill in the Z (Assuming of course that it is not flat w/ the rest of the case, from your edit, looks like its sunk-in), grab a can of rustoleum paint for plastic (requires no primer or nothin, just mask and shoot).... mask off the red if you wanna keep it, and spray away...

It is probably going to be glossier than the normal plastic's color though, but it's real easy to use newho and doesn't take terribly long to spray the whole thing.. and if you miss spots in the grill, well, its black anyway now innit? (unlike when I shot mine, which was over red plastic)

is there anything that is just really dull like the normal plastic? maybe like a satin plastic spray paint or something?

Well the normal plastics color is put in when it's made...

*thinks*

Have you thought of vinyl dye? It's used a lot for painting drive covers, might do the trick for that Z as well.

I would think (there I go again...) that the "X" piece would come off... Just reminded of the older Xaser II cases from Thermaltake... If it does, I would remove that piece as well, would help with the painting/dyeing process ...

I had an older X II case I did that to, and before I lost my mind and painted the whole thing a totally diff color, I did some spot painting on the backside of the "X", just to compare it to the original case finish. Turned out nice, I finally found the right shade, then went to work on the front of the "X". Something you might find helpful, I dunno...

I also currently have that case and it's a nightmare. That whole bit at the front is removable as a single item leaving about a 1/2" deep hole all the way round. If you do decide to take it all out then i'd strongly advise you to replace the wiring for the HDD LED's at where it folds at the door joint it's very prone to cable breaks like mine has.
