Question need ideas/help on mod idea

Got an idea on a mod that would be cool and useful, and based largely off the featured rig, that caffeine machine thingy....

use a server case and use the top half as a dispenser for bawls/jolt/mtn dew, whatever, by using a refrigeration unit and inside that a tank that can be removed, refilled, cleaned, etc.

im pretty much a n00b when it comes to case mods, but i think little taps in a 5" drive that dispensed bawls or jolt or whatever would be damn cool at a LAN party...does anyone agree with that?

i need information on how to build the refrigeration unit and how to wire it to the computer's power supply, since i have no idea on those two things....if you know anything that could help, email me or reply to this, ideas/help much appreciated!

Actually, I think Wixx was thinkin of doing that and naming it The Caffeine Machine v2.0. I would definitely find it useful for me though, Dew is always nice to have around.

If you aren't familier with modding, I would advise you to stick close to this site for help. You are going to need it.

The mod sounds great, let us help you build it.

you got that one right.....i am gonna need help. ive got an old server case, and i plan to basically emulate what wixx did with the caffeine machine....although if he already had the idea, i guess im not being too original here, am i? whatever...ive never heard of any sort of refrigerator being small enough to fit into a case, server or not...if theres some sort of kit that that gives you the parts and instructions on assembly, that'd be great....anyway, whatever help you can give would be much appreciated...

You can get a desktop fridge that is built for an office.

Remove the unit from it and there ya go or integrate it into it

Or you could just go with the new Prometeia and use some of it's super cooling capabilities

Yeah, i thought bout that, but i dont know the first thing about how to do that, i thought maybe someone else did....i guess i'll just experiment a bit....btw, anybody know how to rig something like that to a regular 12v psu, assuming thats possible? again, im a n00b here.....take pity....

Check this link out: Kool Kase

Unfortunately, they don't make them anymore. But why not turn a small fridge into a case? The only issue would be condensation. What is it that you want to accomplish?

what im trying to do is put a refrigeration unit in the top of a server case, with a tank that stores some sort of drink, mtn dew, jolt, etc., and then have taps on one of the 5" drive bays that dispenses that drink...maybe mount one of those little paper-cup dispensers too....anyway, thx for all the suggestions, ill look at'em all and see what comes up

I will have to give up one of my secret mod desires, check out a normal office water cooler. You know, the one with the bottle in top.

I thought about this too, except in the form of a refrigerated can dispenser. Some considerations:
  • Cooling anything significantly below room temperature (like cold bawls or dew) will require either a peltier or a phase-change cooler. Peltiers use way too much juice, so rule those out.
  • Phase-change coolers will require, at a minimum, a compressor, refrigerant, coils, and a radiator. This requires a lot of real estate.
  • If you're installing a phase-change cooler you might as well go all the way and cool your CPU with it. This too requires additional real estate.
  • One possibility is to have a reservior that the coils are submerged in. The reservoir contains 50/50 water/ethylene glycol and it then pumped through a closed-loop system that covers the GPU, northbridge, CPU.
  • A tap dispenser in the case raises the question of how you fill it up, how you put carbonation in the system, how things are connected...in general this would be very difficult to do in the form of a computer case.
  • Is the ultimate goal here to put a computer inside a soda dispenser or put a soda dispenser inside a computer?
  • Another possibility is to buy the canister of Mountain Dew syrup from your nearest Pepsi vendor and another canister of soda water. These are then kept outside of the case, and when you want to hit the dispenser for soda, the two fluids combine and go through a loop where they are cooled very rapidly, and out comes cold soda.
  • With a refrigerated can dispenser you only have to worry about keeping the soda can container cold, which is a piece of cake.
  • In any case, it's going to require a lot of research, planning, testing, and money. Good luck to you.

well, glad to get some feedback from it...i plan to rip the refrigeration unit out of one of those mini-fridge things and then use the insulation material out of an ice chest to form the storage tank, and have the fridge cool that, then have a pipe or something from the bottom of the tank going to a tap on the front bezel.......if anyone sees something that will not work with this plan, please let me know, wasting time/money isnt fun if you have limited supplies of both........thanks for all the suggestions

how about a dual dispenser? the taps will come from the front? if i was doing something like this, i would use a full tower case, and if the taps were comming from the front i would use at least 4 drives with the dispenser going all the way to teh abck, if not possible a dispenser built into the the fridge!

ive sketched an MS-Paint mockup of how I think its gonna look
www.geocities.com/omoi_piero/bawlsbox.jpg

as well as a txt file explaining what i think im gonna need for it
www.geocities.com/omoi_piero/bawlsbox.txt

the main problem is finding the refridgeration equipment that i can afford and that will also fit. the 80$ fridge at thinkgeek fits almost perfectly, but i dont have much money right now, so im still looking around to see what other options i have
