Default Simple Question

I've got an old computer I picked up for free. I wan't to mod it but it's got rivets holding the side panels to the chassie. I'm not sure how to get around these rivets. If I drill them out like I normally would, I'm afraid it will get metal shavings on all my computer parts. Anyone got any ideas how how to deal with this?

Take the parts out of the case and then drill out the rivets.

I think he ment the sides of the case are riveted on. Which means he can get the sides off to get the hardware out.

If that is the case, how about laying the case down on the non-mobo side and drilling those rivets first so the shavings fall away from the mobo as much as possible.

I agree with SCP, pull everything out before you do anything, whether drilling or dremeling. If it helps, I did a little post about removing the rivets on a Lian Li window panel. Check it out HERE. Once you get the rivets out, by whatever method you prefer, don't forget to figure out the re-attaching nuts/bolts/whatever (I did, that's why I said that). Good luck!

hex screw maybe?
I'm pretty sure to INSTALL a rivet you need to be able to get at both sides of the joint

Not really, but then he would have the broken off pieces floating around inside the case which wouldn't be good.

Yeah, I can't take the parts out because the sides are attached with rivets. The maker is stupid for doing this, but I guess they didn't think that anyone would have a reason to get into the case. I like the idea of laying it on it's side to help keep the metal shavings off the parts, that should work fine. Thanks everyone.

Get a drill stop for your bit before you go drilling through as recommended by GF. That way you can set how deep the drill goes when you punch through and avoid destroying anything by gouging it with the bit.

After getting the case open, you may want to tap the drilled holes so that they will accept case thumbscrews afterwards.

Yeah, what I think I'll do is lay the pc flat on the side that's opposite the mobo and drill those rivets out. Once I get that side off I'll be able to remove all the parts before I work on the rest of the case. And trust me, I won't be using rivets to put the case back together. lol

Just an idea:

Before you get started, round up a digital cam and snap some pics, before/during/after as best you can, might come in handy for other members who may come across this same case/problem later on...

I would think that if you found a computer so old that the panels are riveted on that the compenents would be a little outdated anyway. Not too many people still use a 5 1/4" floppy on Windows 3.1.

If the case is that sweet looking, I wouldn't be worried about the parts inside as much as I would be on how to commit the least amount of damage to the case trying to get it open.

What make and model is it anyway?

It's a no name computer with a 400Mhz Celeron and 64MB's of RAM. lol
The case isn't really sweet looking, but I do see alot of potential.
I'm really only using the computer to run SmoothWall, I don't need it to be fast. Plus, I figue it would be a good computer to practice mods on.
