Interesting Modding Opportunity

I saw one of these in the discovery channel store...

From the manufacturer's website:

I think it would a lot of fun to replace the microcontroller inside the unit, interface it to a PC, and then have the oscillating wand do such things as display CPU utilization, winamp song playing, etc. like most LCDs do.

Sure, put it just inside a side panel window so the base is hidden, or find a way to project the display on a window from the inside.

Haha, I was just at spencers this past weekend and I saw one of those displays. It was so cool, I stared at it for about 20 miutes. That would definately be a cool modding idea. Go for it.

Hell, I would put it at the top of a case so the words floated above the computer. Great idea!

my kids' pediatrian has that in the waiting room and i too started thinking of ways to integrate it in a pc mod, come to think of it since i started modding i find myself pondering ways to mod things i see... my names G and i'm an addict

im still wating for my blue led caller id globe. all sold out.
anyways there was a guide in some magazine on how to build one of those. it was either nuts and volts or popular electronics (now poptronics) either way it should be simple to build if you know how to program a pic or basic controller (like a stamp or atom)
