Default LCD screens on PCs

I bought a crappy premod case a few weeks ago because it had the little led light box in the front and I was all on that until after I did some digging and saw that you can get 40X4 and 24x4 lcds that are far more functional, so yay me, I bought a worthless case, seeing as how I tore the premod window side apart and made a bigger, more functional and bettah one.

Anyways, I started digging on some lcd screens (crystalfontz) and some of the other generics out there that are hella cheaper, then I realized I had to solder out a db25 and thought what a waste for netstats and mbm using resources so I looked around some more and saw how cheap 4" and 5.6" color lcds were, so im gonna rip out that crap display and toss a color lcd in there run on my tv-out but there is one problemo.

What are the actually height and width of a 5.6 lcd screen, 5.6 means nothing to me, because well I don't feel like trying some fuzzy math to try and figure out the real dimensions to draw up and cut out. If it matters the pre framed hole on this boy is 4.3"x4.3" so preferrably I could just use that instead of trying to dremmel out plexi because well that never turns out good....

Anyways, if anyone has those measurements would be much abliged.

Also, if anyone else out there... Where can I find a cheap 5.6, been scrouring for days and trying to find a deal on ebay, but about $90-120 including shipping seems to be about the lowest I can find, anyone have better luck?

Do you happen to know the resolution on that thing. Most seem to be around 900 x 250 or so.

When you say not too readable... how unreadable are we talking? Say, for example, can you read text or anything in a browser?

I'm not totally after looks, although i want it to look pimped out, I still want to have it provide some functionality. Otherwise I'll just save the cash and find an old 10.4 or 12.1 notebook screen and some schemo and pin it out to a db15 and mount in on empty side of my case.

whoa.. that's an idea, the laptop LCD one.. I have this old laptop at home with a dead mobo just gathering dust and I've been trying to think of something to do to/with it.. that would be a pretty unique mod, ripping the screen off the laptop and finding a way to mount it on a PC case.. even if all I do is have it displaying funky screensavers. Don't worry, if I do ever get around to making a mod like that I'll give you full credit for the original idea. After all, the screen's not doing anything right now, rather than throw it out, might as well hack it into something fun.

Nah its not an original idea, I've seen a few done like that. The problem is that all those notebook lcds have some funky proprietary cable, and you have nowhere to look for something that shows you how to do it. I think thats why its not really commonly done, I mean you can get a 14.1 TFT on ebay for like 30.00 shipped if you wait around who WOULDN'T buy a 14.1 low profile LCD screen for that low if you could make something like that out of it easily.

My color lcd on my upcoming box is 5.6 inches diag and has resolutions of 1024 x 768

cost me 100.00 on sale from partsexpress.com

its very easy to hook up with power leads (it uses 12 volts since its for a car) to a 12volt molex and it comes with a composite to rca adaptor.

just hook it right up as a secondary display on your vid card or get a second pci card with tv out and change your display settings and there ya have it, easy as pie.

Abyssling do you have the vertical and horizontal measurements for that, so I can see if it will fit in this precut window ?

head over to partsexpress.com and check out their selection

they have measurements for all of their lcds and several sizes in case this one is too big/small when you click on the link to the selected product

mine was Overall Dimensions (mm): 118W x 85H x 40D * Active Area (mm): 113.3W x 84.7H

seems the reso on their current 5.6 model isnt quite as good as what i have though

Resolution (dots): 960V x 234V=224,640 * Dot Pitch (mm): .138 W x .416 H * Contrast Ratio: 30 * Response Time (mS): 30 Rise, 40 Fall

still pretty damn good for 100.00!

check it out HERE for a link to their lcd modules ranging from 4 inch to 6.4

btw its a pain to change your brightness color and tint once you have it installed because its done by some extremely small variable resistors on the back of the screen using a very small screwdriver (like for a watch) I suggest hooking it up outside your box and checking screen settings before installation

Also, do you have the partsexpress parts number? I looked around abit but didn't see any lcds that supported 1024x768 and i looked under all the lcds under 200..

I may very well be mistaken baldwooky, i thought for sure it supported reso that high, i havent actually used it yet aside from some initial testing though since this is for a rig in progress, a rig that will probably still be in a progress a year from now heh

the lcd i posted above (205-017) is almost identical to the one i have, but rest assured the screen quality is pretty damn good when you think about how large the screen actually is

That partsexpress looks like a good source. Tundra Electronics also has a bunch of lcd screens from 4-7" in the $90-$120 range.

For anyone else who's interested, they also have a 6" LCD with a DVD/MP3 player and remote (12 volt) for $214, or with a TV tuner for $294.

actullay the res on most lcds that size is around 320 x 234. for 4:3 aspect ratio lcds that are about 4 to 6 inches. if those trimmer pots are to small and in the back you can always buy reguar size ones and do some soldering work.

I have a laptop LCD from a compaq laying around also but I can't find any information on how to make it work. I guess it will just gather more dust.
