| Okay, this isn't anything to be proud of, just a story of my day that happens to include what I'd call a mini-mod. I come in from work this morning and come into my room and there is this loud grumbling growling terrible sound that I noticed even in the hallway! The otherday, the fan on my 9800 AIW had started making a sound, but I just tapped it a couple of times (once I figured out where it was comming from) and it wound back up without the sound. No such luck this time. I first took it off and tried dustering it off, sounds like the bearings may have went bad, I had just recently cleaned it I plugged it back in and fired the computer up, sounded about like my 84 Maxima (God rest her soul) did before she finally died. Not good. Now, eventually I want to watercool this card, probably finally get the guts of the system ordered and installed in the next couple of weeks (I was going to build a new system but the case that I cut up to watercool (see project pics)... well, I just don't like my design as much now and don't feel like blowing a wad of cash on a new PC for it), but the noise was making me crazy today, and I couldn't fathom living with it for 2 hours, much less two weeks--I watch TV on my computer, It would be like watching a movie with the vacuum cleaner going (not that bad, but bad). So here is what I did. I took a spare ADDA fan that I'd removed from my PC65 in favor of Japanaflos and modified this lego suspension cage (long story--oh, and if you read the long story, here is a link to the conclusion and why I'm now more than a little discouraged with my design--I'm such a watercooling n00b) so that I could mount the fan on top. Anyway, here are some pictures. Apparently it works (In fact, I think it works a lot better). It's definitely much quieter. Kind of ghetto, definitely temporary, but better than living with the noise for two weeks or more. Anyways, that's pretty much the story of my morning. Bruce [edit: It used to let me O/C it to about 5950 3dmarks-'03) on the old fan, I wonder if it would be different with this one... I may test and post results later] [edit2: I've found out that dangerdens video water block won't fit on AIW cards, does anyone have a suggestion for a block that will work that is available with 1/2" barbs stock?] Last edited by caxis0; 19-July-04 at 08:28 AM.. | ||

| What about one of those blocks from d-tek customs? I've not heard much about them. http://www.dtekcustoms.com/index.asp...ROD&ProdID=118 Think they would work? I'mma drop them an email and see if they know anything. Bruce | ||
