Thumbs up drilling with a dremel tool, can it be done?

first of all, i'd like to say hi to all of you, i love what goes on at this site.

I, myself, am planning to do a bit of a case mod which involves me moving to water cooling for the first time. I'll need a 120mm blowhole on the top of my case. I don't really want to spend too much on tools; so I'm looking at a dremel 395 multi pro to do the job along with reinforced cutting wheels.

I did a bit of searching before I made a post, but I still haven't found an answer to whether or not you can adequately make 5mm screw holes for the fan with a drill bit for the dremel.

Can it be done?

First of all, Welcome To Pimprig!!!

Yes, I've used my Dremel as a drill many times. Go for it!

Welcome to PR, medium

I seem to be in a minority of one here - I don't rate the Dremel as a do everything/must have tool.
I do own one, and it is useful, but only in a tiny fraction of cases is it the best tool for the job - IMO it's the _last_ tool you should consider getting for the job, not the first.

Firstly, for drilling holes, a mains powered drill (or a decent battery powered drill) is much more suitable - lower revs & higher torque.
You might want to think about getting a holesaw for cutting the blowhole: a decent quality one shouldn't cost you more that £/$15, but you'll need an arbour for it too (another $/£10). For that sort of money though, you could get a jigsaw instead, which will be a lot more versatile.

Getting a good result with a jigsaw is just a matter of technique - start by drilling about an inch inside the line you want to cut to, then sort of "spiral" the cut out to the line. Don't try & cut it in one go (you'll end up outside the line if you try & push the saw), but instead cut approx 1/8th of an inch, move the saw back, turn it, cut another 1/8th & so on.
Take a look at the blowhole guide - that's an 80mm blowhole cut with a jigsaw, untouched by Dremel

Even if you don't want to use a jigsaw, you might find Glitterkill's cutting templates very useful.

Yes...but...

From with my experiences, The drill bit it usually too long, so the tip of the bit virates, so you get a really crappy hole. If it's basic, use a jigsaw...like JE suggested.

When i need a blow hole cut somewhere i usually get my rotozip and cut inside the line and use and rounded very fine file and start easy at it. if your patient it will look pro.

thanks for your replies. i realize that the dremel isn't the first tool to use, but i'm willing to put in the work because I don't want to purchase so many tools just for one blowhole.

I'm going to half- agree with Jonny here. A jigsaw will make a cleaner cut, quicker, especially if you have little or no experience with a dremel. However, jigsaws SUCK for cutting acrylic. I'm assuming where you want to cut is metal, so you should be good there.

To answer your question, yes, you can drill with a Dremel, but its risky. As Jonny allready said, you want high torque and low rpm's when you drill, especially with acrylic; a dremel is the opposite. You may find yourself burning metal and shattering acrylic with a Dremel.

In your position, I would go for the Dremel; its the ultimate versatile tool. It's not perfect at anything, but it can do anything. Still, try to borrow an actual drill if you can.

Have I got the idea that you arn't gonna get hooked on modding, and you want just a blowhole right? and you want to do this yourself...
Then here is what you could use and all for the price of a decent 120mm fan...

welcome and good luck in your endeavors...and wear the goofy looking eye protection for sure...
