Default how do I use this stupid thing

I just got a dremel and I am thouroughly unimpressed. I know it has to be me. I cannot cut in a straight line. Turns are a pain in the ass. I can't grind down this ruff jigsaw cut. I am just ildremelit? How the heck do you guys do any detail work with one of these?

it gets easier with practice. i couldnt even hold the damn thing in place long enough to make a cut, and i would break wheels left and right. but now its much better, its all practice.

Practice, practice, and practice...lol...Let the wheel do most of the work for starters, dont try making it cut vs. letting it cut.

Practice is key. For straight lines hold it like you are holding a golf club. Everyone has their own technique. I like to wear safety goggles and be fairly close to what im cutting so I can get a better idea of the angles. I definitely wouldnt try this without goggles. Hot acrylic in the eye hurts like hell as well as hot metal shavings hot plastic...you get the idea.

Have patience when cutting. And if something seems wrong, go watch TV, don't push the little sucker. Mine started smoking, now I'm dremel-less.

my first rotary tool was a Black & Decker Wizard... it was cordless, I'd use it for cutting my chainmail rings. I'd push it too damn hard, and the motor would pull enough amps that the battery would die in a little under a minute. Point is, go slow, let it do the work. The harder you push, the more goes wrong.

So let me get this straight, what you guys are hinting at is that I should practice. Okay, roger wilco, will do. How about grindage and I am not talking about weezing the juice. I need to grind down about 1mm all the way around a rectangular hole that I made.

Oh yeah and thanks for the linkage Kayin.

I would probably use a half round file for that.

A good set of files should be included with a dremel kit, but since theyre not, go buy a good set...lol...Theyre key to smoothly finishing off your cuts you make inside your design lines.
A set of large files along with a set of smaller jewelers files would be ideal.

Awww Man, not manual labor, that is why I thought I bought the dremel! Maybe I'll jam one of these files in my dremel...

umm well since dremels are rotary tools and you need vertical motion with a file, don't think that will work . .. and besides dremels don't have that much torque so probably wouldn't do much

The thing about the Dremel that makes me frusterated is that the blade spins clockwise, making it hard as hell to work with in my right hand, unless I want debris sprayed into my face. It helps if you have your case secured and are able to walk completely around it, but sometimes cutting an akward corner requires some major wrist contortions.

Also, I think he was probably kidding about putting a file into his Dremel...

dont call it stupid - if you do, it will call you stupid back by cutting you and magleing cases .

My intention is to buy in 2 or 3 old AT cases or find them, and then practise on them. as above in alomost all posts- practise.

Needle files are a good fit in Dremel collets ... & they do actually work quite well, until you apply a bit too much sideways force & they bend.

I tried it & know the hard way that it's not possible to hold a Dremel with both hands (to try & stop it bucking) _and_ turn it off at the same time. Pulling the plug out of the wall with your toes is not easy either.
