Default LCD Display

Does anybody know how hard it would be to hook this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...sPageName=WDVW
up to a computer and what it would involve?

Also, can anybody give me some rough measurements on how big this thing is...I need it to fit in kind of a tight spot.

Well just by looking at it, its a crystal fontz which is known for computer lcds so it shouldnt be too hard. I believe its roughly slightly smaller then a 5.25" bay. LIke he says in his post, you can find information about it at crystalfontz.com

Didn't PR do a review for one? I suggest you go for the larger model.

Im not sure how hard it would be to hook this up. You can go here and get the dimensions for the lcd.

Ive done a few lcd mods and I always look for ones that use the HD44780 controller chip. I get all my lcd's from http://www.eio.com/lcdprodt.htm . You can get one here for as little as 6 bucks. I just used the Seiko L2014 4X20 LED Backlight LCD on a computer and if you have decent soldering skills you can run this through your parallel port. They give you a nice schematic also so you can make sure you are soldering the right pins.

If you can solder it is very easy to hook up and get going, you just need an old parallel printer cable, the DLport95 drivers(if your using XP) and a control program.I reccomend JaLCDs @ www.jalcds.de.

I have a 20x4,green backlight LCD,pre-wired and ready to go I will sell ya for $20

Well I've looked at their dimensions and it seems like I'm going to need a 16x1 character display so it will fit in my space....

So if I got this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...sPageName=WDVW

I'd just need to hack up an old printer cable and re-solder it and then download some drivers? Sounds like a good deal to me. I'm guessing that it would have to stay the green color though because it has EL backlight. I think it was Clown who I just recently saw change an LCD's color but I guess that was with LED backlight?

Thats pretty much it. Although depending on the LCD you get you may need to get a couple poteniometers to adjust the contrast and the backlight brightness,or you could put fixed resistors of the proper value.

I have also changed EL backlight LCDs using EL wire,if you coil it up inside it looks pretty good, but you dont get as nice results as you do with changing ones with LEDs,some are impossible as the LEDs are potted in epoxy in a couple of rows behing the screen.

EDIT: And make sure you can get a datasheet for it first, most 44780 based LCDs have the same connector pinout but some are different

On the 20x4 I have?

Im not sure I have never had this one apart to tell,It is an LED backlight, but from the looks of it Yes it probably can.
Sometimes you can get away with edge lighting them even if you cant replace what is already there, nearly all use surface mount LEDs so you need to have a steady hand and a small tip soldering iron to change them correctly

You can change it,just depends on the trouble you want to got through.

Looks to me like a standard HD44780 compatible LCD screen. There is a tech article on this site that tells how to wire it up to the parallel port and make it work. However, that one looks like its only a 16 X 2. I would look for a 20 X 4 display. I have built 2 of them now, and for the effort, its worth the extra screen size. The backlight color can't easily be changed, its actually an array of tiny leds' behind the screen. You could leave the original backlight disconnected, and side light it, but it wouldn't look as even as the original backlighting. These screens come in lots of colors though, its easier just to buy the one thats the color you want.
