Default DIY Fan Filters discussion

I am currently working on the design stage of my next mod. For this case I plan on making 8 custom fan filters so accompany all my fans. I've been looking around online and found really cool ones for $2 at Nexfan here , but as usual I would like to do it myself instead of buy something that won't quite fit with my theme. I was going to make some homemade ones out of pantyhose, but I don't feel like having to buy new pantyhose every month to ensure good airflow.

So far I think I'm going to make my own filters out of plexi-glass. I plan on going with one of two designs which I have attached. I am either going to use a 24x24 array of 1/8th holes or 12x12 setup of 7/32nd holes. I am also contemplating making these out of aluminum instead of plexiglass because that way they won't crack as easy.

Anyone have any experience or tips on creating DIY fan filters??

Can't remember who, but someone here said pantyhose. Never tried that though! I don't put women's underthings in my computers.

I use used dryer sheets, Make sure there the static free kind. I just replace mine every couple weeks, don't even have a custom enclosure or grill cause the suction of the fans hold it up.

here's a tut homemade using them http://http://www.overclockers.com/tips1150/index.asp

btw. if u don't have a supply of dryer sheets at least every couple weeks, i hope u use a lot of deodorant.

Yup, pantyhose works great! It's just a pain to remove and clean.

Someone needs to make a fan filter grill with a removable filter that can be rinsed clean.

Those holes would be pretty restrictive to airflow IMO.

To make an "easy clean" one, what about using your existing design, making 2 plexi grills, but with the drilled section totally cut out.
Sandwich a piece of hosiery between the two plexi pieces (like frames) and glue it down.

To clean it, just rinse under tap water - no rust, no hassle!

You'd need some longer screws to attach to the fan, and you may want to modify the plexi "frame" design to provide some more support for the pantyhose fabric when it gets blown by the fan - but it should work

They have those. I've also thought about building one. They sell the washable filters for AC units, they are suppose to last forever. Good air flow, cut to size, only downsize is cost.

Heh, what a great idea MasterP. I'd have to go with white hose though. Brown would look like doo-doo and I don't think they have clear.

Dryer sheets FTW

I had a case with a few of these on it already...

Steel Mesh Filter/Grill Combo Silver 80mm For 8cm Case Fan-Best Computer Online Store Houston Buy Discount Prices Texas-Directron.com

since they are bowed outward, they are easily tacked to, and provide a little bit more space for air to flow through. Not that they already offer a restricted filter type affect, I just glued my corners with 2 dryersheets that i ironed together (they stick together when ironed out, and stay stiffer) and bam almost my faovrite fan filter.

Another medium would be old speaker fabric. Those classic speakers that you are throwing out, have a front cover made of thin meshy type fabric. Of course another option is buying the fabric like mesh for netting, or getting this stuff here.
