Default WOW! New laptop runs extremely hot.

Everest home shows my GPU running at 176 F and its been as high as 189F, im not sure if thats a mistake on a sensor on my laptop but thats extremely hot. Specs are AMD turion 64 x2 TL-50, 1gb DDR2 memory, nVidia geForce 6150 go 256mb. Is this normal for a dual core laptop?

I have to say, they even suggest you dont put the laptop on your lap anymore. the case is kinda a heatsink so. yea i dont like the heat they produce these days.

If I'm converting that correctly then its nothing to worry about, most laptop parts are built to deal with that kind of temperature, Refluxes Dell XPS Gen2 lets his GPU heat up to 105 C before it down clocks.

Uh huh, but ex412 only has a GeForce 6150 in his laptop, which should produce next to no heat because it's so basic.

What are you measuring the temperature with ex412? I suggest using the nVidia control panel if you're not already. And are you absolutely sure you have a GeForce 6150? Cos those temps are the kind that I would expect from a high-level discrete graphics card such as the 7800/7900 series.

That said, laptop parts are definitely designed to take a lot of heat - but this is odd. Are these temps at idle or under load? Cos if it's at idle, you've got problems. nVidia mobile GPUs throttle down for 2D - mine is about 50c in Windows and rises only to the temperatures you note when I'm playing something like FEAR.

EDIT: Iateronmly informs me that the 6150 does run a bit toasty.

As I told you over MSN - 6100/6150s actually produce a lot of heat. I had one on a mATX board and with good case airflow and a rather large passive aluminum heatsink I'd get 55c readings off it (50 or so C with the GPU function turned off). If I had to guess, I'd guess 6150s put off 40~ watts of heat. I never found where there's a mobile version of the chipset, so I'm very firm in the belief they're identical. Although I found mention of different s.bridges to compliment the 61XX line.

So as a GPU yes, that part of the chip doesn't produce much heat, the chipset itself acting as a north bridge does though.

Go get a laptop cooling pad...it will keep your legs protected and lower that heat some...you can even get them with a usb hub on them if you need it.

I second that, I've used NHC for a while now and there's nothing like it.

The hottest ive read a x2 was off an acer in the glass case at work. It hit 94c. You can do a few things. Clean the hell out of the cpu hsf. If you can get at it. Reapply thermal paste and its a notebook not laptop. Always run it on a hard surface. Such as a table. Not a lap. Or bed. They have alot higher insulative properties. And when you run off of batteries usually systems throttle back system power to conserve energy. So it should run cooler on battery power. Notebook gpu's usually run unusually hot. Contact manufacturer? If its a problem. If you cant get at the gpu itself. Call the manufacturer and ask about max temps for the gpu.
