Default changing the voltage

Pretty much what i'm wondering is since the fan connector has both 5v line and 12v line can i snip off the 12volt line and just have it run through the 5volt and it will work fine? or will this deem the fan useless? im wondering because i dont want a fan controller, and i dont want the fans running full speed.

I think the same thing applies with the 3 pin connector. Just get yourself a small screwdriver or a pin remover and you should be all set.

Well if you run it off of 5V there might not be enough voltage to start the fan, if you dont mind snipping the wires you can make 7V. Im guessing you have +12, +5 amd ground on your 3 pin connector? Usually its +12, Tach, ground. If so, you can just cut the power wires off, and leave the tach on. You can solder the wires to a regular 4 Pin connector.

No, your using the +5 as ground and the +12 as Positive. Its the same thing as if you used -12 for ground and +12 for positive you would get +24V.

I can't say for sure about the 3 pin, but in order to change the 4 pin you just swap the 12v and 5v so when it goes through your PSU it doesn't get the 12V it only gets 5

EDIT:
wait though, isnt the 3 pin different. isnt one of the wires for the sensor?
