i just got a tornado
too ****ing loud
need to lower the rpm....
how can i send less power to the fan so it turns slower essientially making it quieter...
is there any way to make it quieter without losing rpms or chm?

No way to make it less quiet without slowing it down. And to slow it down, just stick it with less voltage. The easiest way is to make a simble rheobus using a potentiometer

or you could wire in some resistors to lower the speed for good, or if you dont have room for a rheobus

Hey
you can just cut and splice the yellow and the black wire and connect the two. Doing so will drop the voltage down to 7V instead of the original 12V. That will slow it down a fair amount and also lower the dB level, although you will lose some CFMs too!

Extreme's method is the easiest.

But I would drop the Jackson to get a bay or rheobus myself. That way the cooling power is there if you need it.

I was thinking for my self, to have three way toggle switches for my fans, one for 12V, 5V and off, and blue LEDs for the 12V, and red LED's for the 5V....(starts thinking...)

Hawklen,
linkage to bit-tech The (probably) easiest way, although it's 12v/off/7v rather than 12/5/off.

5V probably wouldn't be enough to get a 120 spinning. That's why most bay switches run 12/7/0.

Get another fan JK. I would get, or make a simple rheobus like jcarkeys said at the beginning, or the resistor solution, either way would work.

I have two tornado's. I have one on a aerocool all copper base HS that's ducted to the side of the case and one that's flush mounted to the side. Both are blowing in. I am use the Vantec 4 fan controller. It runs the fans from 2 to 7 volts. At 7 volts I am getting 30c on the cpu at full load. The controller is the way to go for 32 usd from outpost.com. It was way too loud at 12v.

If they have db's like the tornado's then hella loud. Check into the stealth 120's.

I know what you mean about loud fans, zen :;points at the 172mm fan that moves at 4200RPM, two power supplys and 5 80mm's inside of case::

I have a Vantec Tornado. GET A RHOEBUS you wont be dissapointed. You have the cooling power if you need it, such as a hot day or extreme overclocking, and you can adjust the voltage all the way and turn it off if you want. You dont have to use one for just fans so thats a plus. You can use it for your CCFL's even. I found that the starting voltage for my tornado is 6.7 volts so 7 volts barely gets it going. Thats why you can crank the rhoebus when you first turn on your computer and then crank it down to 5 volts. My tornado stops spinning when it got to exactly 5 volts. @ 5.5 volts once its spinning it will stay spinning sufficiently, pretty much unaudible and pretty high CFM still. You got a good fan there, but with the price of noise. Get a rhoebus it'll make your life easier in the long run.
