Default what am i doing wrong?

Athlon 1800+ (not oc'ed)
TT volcano 7 w/ quiter, but more powerful fan
Epox 8k3a+
512mb pc 2700 ram
ambient temp in room for lizard is about 90°-100°
2 x maxtor hd's
generic case, good air flow

(this is my cpu temp)

why are my temps hovering around 140° when the side panel is off and 150°-155° with the side panel on?? if i quit folding, it'll drop to 129°...the lowest, in december, when my lizard almost died, the cpu temp got to 115°

2 questions, do you heatsink compound or a thermal pad between the cpu and heatsink? And is the fan blowing down onto the heatsink?

Try loosing the shim. It doesn't help cooling and can actually cause it to run hotter if it is too thick.

Your biggest problem is your ambient temp. Second....you're folding. And what do you mean by "quieter but more powerful fan"? If you mean you using a larger fan and an adapter that can be a problem. Adapters are horribly inefficient. Volcano 7 is an adequate hsf, but not a high performance one.

But even a top of the line Thermalright isn't going to give you great temps folding in a 90 degree room. You could underclock and crank up thermal throttling in BIOS. Doubt it would help much though. Not a lot of idle cycles when folding.

OK, all sillyness asisde, get rid of that PIECE OF ****E HS and either get a SLK7, SLK800 or go back to the stock HS. It has been said time and time again that the Thermaltake heatsinks are gargbage (even worse than stock),

Honestly Napalm, I expected more from you seeing that you are a regular here on the boards.

Lost the Tt Volcrappo 7, give ur lizard a god damn infrared light and drop your damn room temperature, and give it a 120mm fan using a 120mm to 80mm adapter. HIGH cfm @ <30DbA

I wont swear by 'm but tt volcano works just fine for me. My wifes works just fine, My moms works just fine. All are kept on med speed wit no issues with temp.

Anyway have you try'd ducting fresh air from outside to your rig for the air conding vent.. The exhaust would be warm for the lizard.

How the **** do you sleep at night in 100 farenheit temperatures? I bet that you contanstly got sweat dripping off of you whenever your in your room. God damn get the liz an infrared light and lower the room temperatures to a more normal temperature. I recommend getting an SLK-800 with a Panaflo Medium Flow fan. Their quite yet still pack quite a punch.

actually, im use to AZ heat, so 100° is nothing for me...it's what the iguana needs....but i dont think my cpu should be running 40°-50° hotter, even if it's folding...fan speed is i think around 4000rpms, about 30db, and about 40cfm...which the TT one before was like 45db and only like 30cfm....POS!!...

hey Napalm,,,you reminded me that my whole approach to cooling is about to change,,,,moving from alaska to hawaii next weekend,,,if i want better temps i,m use to opening the window
behind the desk with a higher ambient temp in hawaii, i will actually have to pay a lot more attention,,,,
glad i am waiting until i get there to build a new system,,,,,
probably will need lots of ideas on cooling...

my tt volcano 9 works quite well. At ambient @ 70F, my cpu is at 108F with the fan at around 3000rpm (medium setting)

thank god for the Celcious to Faranheight (spelling sucks I know) converter button on my I/O panel, just hit a button, and its in F!

sheesh, 100 degree ambient??? and you say 140 is more thant it should? My ambient temp is about 65 to 70 I run 105 on 100% load with thermaltake 7+ on low. D00d try taking your comp to another room for 1 day and see what happens.

Sorry for the flame earlier Napalm. I've been sorta short fused lately and tha fact that I just got home from blowing off steam at a perty prolly didn't help much either.

Anyhow, the TT7 HS fan combo you are running just struck a nerve with me as that company has come up soo much....
