| i have half a plan... and here it is i want to put 2 92x32mm Sanyo-Denki fans in the bottom of my case as intakes, causing positive pressure but i want them to be filtered - really good, i have to clean out my gpu and cpu fans monthly due to the amount of crap in the air where i live.... any filtering ideas would be good. i'll add my paint rendering tonight if i get some time.... | ||

| Etiquette & English Gentleman | Buzz, I've been thinking about the dust issue for my next rig - although BA's suggestion has merit (cheap, can be easily fitted with elastic bands, & in the modern world you're not going to get funny looks for buying stockings), I've been thinking along the lines of automotive air filters. I was thinking either I'd use something like a K&N & show it off (on top of the case & have ducting to the bottom), or a filter & box off a Harley, or similar. The other option is to take a more stealthy approach & fit them inside the case - I've been looking at flat cabin filters & the filters on my car & bike - they're basically shaped like a big can of beans. Whatever option I eventually go for, I'll be sealing up every aperture or panel join - everything that is not directly involved with the intended in & out ducts/holes. | |

| LOL Putwig... I was trying to think of what those durn things were called. Unless you're gonna be downright religious about cleaning those filters, it may not be a good idea to have the intakes bottom mounted... Where does the case normally sit? Perhaps really tall feet to keep the fans away from horizontal (dust gathering) surfaces? Have to admit, I love the whole positive pressure thing. I've got an XPC here, and it had one exhaust fan only. After a week, the front USB and firewire ports were full of dust. I cut in an 80mm intake on the side, filled it with an M1A, replaced the back outlet fan with an L1A. Squeaky clean! | ||

| I like the nylon stockings idea, easily removable and you can just cut you another square when it gets realy dirty. About the K&N, when i ordered my parts from K&N for my truck, they sent me the wrong intake filter, so i sent it back, but the one they mistakenly sent me was a small, flat, carburator shaped filter. that would be cool to put into a PC... my K&N Gen2 intake is too big for a PC... | ||

I can see it now, IceMan Intakes for your PC! When can I get an underdrive pulley for my XP2100+?

OK, maybe not... the temptation to go the whole hog (or hawg ) would always be there ... I bet someone has already fitted out a rig with a hand stiched saddle & matching toolbag, 6 bend pullbacks, straight through shotguns & a mini Bates ![]()

| have the same problem with dust and stuff at my place. I order to keep my house clean, I went to my local Home Depot and bought vent filters for my furnace ducts. They cheap as old chips - $3.97 - and do a great job at filtering. I have an Antec case which has fan filters on the front, but none of the side intake. Big problem for blowing all sorts of crap on my vid card. I took one of the duct filters and cut it to size, slapped it on there and now everything is beautiful. Here's what they look like | ||

| the rig is sitting on a lower shelf on my desk, i plan on getting some taller feet for it so there is room for the air to come in. the stockings and the furnace filters both sound like solid solutions. i'll keep my eye out for stuff untill i get a chance to start on this project.... thanks for the ideas... | ||

| just had a thought as to what you could use for an air filter using that plan; Get a small dirtbike filter. i remember my first bike, a 1980 Yamaha 80cc (handy little pit bike) had a oval filter that would work great with a 80 or 120mm fan. Since i have about an hour to kill I am going to browse around and see what I can find. If you like, I can dig up some images. Last edited by Ben; 23-April-03 at 12:26 PM.. | ||

| hey Buzz... what if you cleaned the air once it got in the case? Have you seen the Ionic breeze? That air filter thing that's absolutly silent. We have them at my house, works wonders, all ya'll will alergies, definatly get one, or four. But they make little bathe room sized ones, and even little personal ones. What if you modded one to sit inside your case and colect any dust that makes it's way it. It's a breeze to clean, no nead to replace filters, won't slow doen your intake, and no funny looks for buying panty hoes. This is the bathroom modle... http://www.sharperimage.com/us/en/ca...id=1&catid=101 you can also get em refurb at half off. | ||

Buzz, just go to an auto store (a big chain where all the stock is on the shelves & the staff don't know an airfilter from a hole in the ground & will leave you alone - In the UK, Halfords fit the bill perfectly, I guess there must be a chain in the States like that too - rather than a Mom & Pop outfit where they know their stuff & keep the stock behind the counter) & have a root around. Cabin air or aircon filters are more likely to be flat, but you might get lucky & find a rectangular job that would meet your needs. The top doesn't need to be anymore complicated than a flat sheet of aluminium, steel, or perspex (illuminated air filter anyone?)

| This great chrome Edelbrock air filter I got on top of my rig (check out my gallery) only cost $20 and has a removable foam filter I just rinse in the sink. stops a LOT of dust. slow, quiet 120mm fan sucks a lot of air. blows right on the MOBO automotive air filters (paper or foam) will filter more dust and particulate matter than nylons or screens or fan filters. But they are more restrictive to the airflow, so you gotta get a big one. More area = less restrictive probably too big to go inside a conventional case. proof; My case is completely open in the back and there is NO dust on my SFF horizontally-mounted MOBO after SIX MONTHS w/out cleaning!
