To help with overclocking we need some hardware info:
(List includes some examples)

Motherboard model and revision (Abit NF-7S rev 2, Shuttle AN35N Ultra)
Memory brand and rated speed (Corsair XMS PC 3200, Kingston Hyper X PC3500)
Power supply (Antec Tru Power 480 watt, Fortran 350 watt)

There are temp probes allready included in most modern systems, they are not the most accurate, but give you an idea of whats going on.
You can use Motherboard Monitor to see temps and voltages, it takes a little bit to set up correctly, ask if you have some questions

CompuNurse makes a probe that goes anywhere, but it might require a slot to be made in the socket for the wiring.
It needs to be near the edge of the CPU die to measure the temps. Most accurate would be at the center of the chip, but that is not normally practical

As far as OC settings, you want to concentrate on raising the FSB, stock is 333MHZ (166 MHZ in the Bios)
Most Athlon XP 2600+ Cpu's can reach 400FSB, but may require dropping your multiplier 1 notch if your CPU is unlocked.

A good Heat sink and fan from Zalman or Thermalright is around 35-50$ and will allow a much higher overclock that the stock one.
Thermal Paste Like Arctic Silver 5 will also help to lower your temps even more, adding stability and increasing Overclocking potential , even with a stock Heat sink... it is under 10$ if money is tight right now.

Try raising the FSB 2mhz at a time in your Bios (From 166 FSB to 168FSB then to 170FSB, etc..) then use a program like Folding@home or Prime 95 to check and see if it is stable after each change, let us know how it goes

HondaToons, one thing you do need to learn is the edit button. Don't post repeatedly like you have been.

Ok easy enough grab CPUZ or my favorite Crystal CPUID and take some pics (Hit Print Screen on yer keybaord then Copy Paste it to a new file in MS paint, save as a .JPG) or tell us what you find...

It will show Memory speed, brand and timings, Motherboard revision, Bios info and CPU voltage too. Just click on the different tabs.
