Default Major cooling issues

Hey.
On Friday I built a friend of mine a 2.8CP4 system with a Radeon 9700 pro and a gig of corsair XMS in the Antec LANboy (regular, not Super LANboy).... Smartfan is giving an idle of 38C or higher, and playing CS is bringing it up past 45C. I need to get the temps down without dramatically increasing noise or cutting more fan holes. Right now there are two 30CFM fans, an intake in the front and a blower in the back. no OCing is being done to this box.

What I was wondering is the feasibility of a ducting mod, putting a small airduct to connect the back blower with the stock intel heatsink. only problem I can see with it is that the hot air from the other parts will be stuck in there. Any recommendations?

John

45*C is within spec for the P4, unless he plans on OC'ing he's fine. Temps only become an issue when you OC, other than that additional cooling only keeps the room temp. down.

A duct mod over the CPU will help but the rest of the case, including the VGA card will still be hot. There's no sense in ducting cool air on your CPU if the surrounding air is 10*C hotter.

What version Cataylyst drivers is he using, 3.8 makes the 9700 run really hot.

he's using the most recent... 4.0.11whatever. I guess I'm just too used to my own temps, I saw that and panicked. thanks.

How is that? Not to nit-pick but the heat generated by the CPU is relatively constant, so regardless of how 1337 your cooling is, your room temps will rise the same amount regardless. And increasing cooling by other means, peltiers, for example, serves to create even more heat.

Duplex---Like j-dogg said, a duct is probably not a good idea if you've only got 2 fans in your case to start with. Unless he plans on overl****ing or is having stability issues once the temps get higher, there's no real reason to alter the current setup, other than to scrath that itch or a little piece of mind.

Thanks, Anon, for the second opinion. As I've mentioned before, I have 4 vantec tornadoes in my own case, so I'm used to rather low temps for a non-OCed processor.

And to third the point...

As long as temps are below 60c on any modern platform you're fine...
