What makes a game next-generation? More importantly, why have we yet to see a true next-generation game for the Xbox 360? Ben ponders these questions in his review of Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter:
The one thing we're all wondering now that we have our flashy HDTVs and our 360s (and eagerly awaiting our PS3s sometime in the future) is this: what exactly does next-generation gameplay mean? We know what next-generation graphics look like: prettied-up textures and an excellent frame rate running in high resolution.
If you can pare down the graphics and release the game on a weaker system, then it isn't truly next-generation. Perfect Dark: Zero is a very pretty first-person shooter, but that's it. Project Gotham Racing 3 is a very good racing game, but it's a game you could have done without the gee-whiz special effects on any system. Kameo is...well, Kameo is disappointing.
What about the latest Ghost Recon title. Does it fit the bill?
