One of the problems with doing long-term research in Antarctica is the cold and snow, which can wreak havoc on buildings (not to mention bury them). UK architects think they may have solved the problem with a new research facility for the world's coldest continent.
Looking like something you might buy from Lego, the base is made up of connecting pods that will sit above the snow on top of skis. Modular in design, some pods will contain research labs or offices, others living quarters. Color psychologists have been consulted to help design an interior that can ward off depression associated with not seeing the sun for over three months at a time. The legs can be jacked up above accumulated snow, and can be towed across the ice behind bulldozers for relocation.
That gives a whole new meaning to mobile home!
In addition, Dr. Gitlin has the goods on a possible gene therapy breakthrough, the feeding habits of a really big shark, and much more in this week's Science.Ars.
