I dont know if they convert to anything but DVD decryptor and Nero are the best rippers I've used. I think you can convert them after you have the image on your computer.

EDIT: Steve what kinda cooling are you using on that 3000+? 600mhz increase is a nice o/c!

If you want to rip to .avi then use EasyDivx (do a google for it).

Just ensure this is to back up actual movies you own or ones that are free from copyrights.

Heres a few I have used before and work good free to try , But you have to buy the full version.

All Video Converter is a small and effective solution for video file conversion. It supports: AVI to MPEG1, MPEG2, DVD, VCD, and SVCD; and all media formats to DivX (MPEG4) and AVI,PAL-to-NTSC conversion and vice versa are also included, You can change the codec/System type between them including PAL<=> NTSC, Divx <==> cinpeak,as well as support for streaming media (WMV/ASF). An easy-to-use interface allows you to enjoy working with video files without frequently consulting reference materials.

All Video to VCD SVCD DVD Creator & Burner can convert AVI, DIVX, and MPEG files to VCD, SVCD, DVD compatible MPEG files, then burn to video VCD, SVCD,DVD and burn them to a CD-R, CD+R, CD+RW, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+RW, and DVD-RW, With this software, you can create real VCDs, SVCDs, and DVDs so that you can play your movies on VCD or DVD player.
