I need some advice on free hard drive benchmarking utilities - as in, what utility do you use to benchmark your hard drive(s)?

Hook a brotha up...

I've been using SiSoft Sandra 2004 and PCmark2002 for my hd benchmarking.

hehe Hawklen...just looked at your profile...love the "Sex with Women" part...I guess you have to specify now-a-days, huh?

ANYHOO....

What kind of HDD are you running? Methinks it might be 5200 RPM. Also, make sure that the ATA cable is installed correctly. BLUE to Motherboard, BLACK to master, GREY to slave.

hey - you'd be surprised Asshat.

I get systems in here all the time and the fückers are always installing the fkn cable backwards... turns your ATA100 drive into an ATA33

lol..f'ing asshat, my drive is reconized as an ATA133, so the cable is in properly. its a Maxtor 6L040J2, repackaged Quantum drive. And since my cable as a tab on it, impossible to put on wrong, without alot of force. lol

OK...glad to know I'm not the only bastard who knows how to connect an ATA cable properly...with all the Asshats I work with, I was beginning to wonder...

ANYHOO...back to topic...

This is what I've compiled for my HDD test suite:

- Sandra 2004
- PCMark2002
- DiskBench
- Drive 10
- HD Speed
- HD Tach 2.61
- H2 Bench
- Thread Mark 2.0

Reason why I need this, is I've been anointed with the task of determining optimal RAID levels for a new Ultra-320 SCSI SAN array that we'll be getting in here soon. Being the pimp that I am, I'm gonna share my results with y'all, considering not many people have access to this kind of hardware.

Basically I'm going to be testing the following configurations:

- 1x U320 drive (15kRPM)
- 2x U320 drives, RAID-0
- 6x U320 drives, RAID-0
- 2x U320 drives, RAID-1
- 3x U320 drives, RAID-5
- 6x U320 drives, RAID-5
- 6x U320 drives, RAID-10 (3 drives in RAID-0, mirrored)
- 6x U320 drives, RAID-50 (3 drives in RAID-5, mirrored)

(might test with 14 drives on RAID-0, RAID-10 and RAID-5 too)

- 1x WDSE 40GB drive
- 2x WDSE, RAID-0 (Promise Card)
- 2x WDSE, RAID-1 (Promise Card)
- 4x WDSE, RAID-10 (Promise Card)

If anybody wants to see different RAID levels, please let me know. Common hardware is as follows:

SCSI:

Compaq U320 72GB 15KRPM hard drives
Compaq MSA1000 SAN Array http://h18006.www1.hp.com/products/s...000/index.html
Compaq ML570G2 Server (Xeon 2.4 w/ 2GB DDR RAM, Fiber Channel COntroller)
Windows Server 2003

IDE:

Promise TX2000 PCI Card
Compaq ML570G2 Server (Xeon 2.4 w/ 2GB DDR RAM, Fiber Channel COntroller)
Windows Server 2003

This is going to put the "FU" back in FUN!!! Wish me luck...
