| With the impending release of Bioshock less than 24 hours away, and the abundance of reviews already hitting the net, there are a few questions left to be answered. Bioshock has really brought it to the table getting an average of 99% from all reviews thus far released. Some have thrown out the term “Shooter 2.0”. With indefinite replay ability in this shooter, be it shock, burn, shoot, or throw bees at them, this game seemingly has made people “think” before they act, with their limited resources. So that said, is it really a ‘2.0’ of the FPS genre? From what I’ve played on the Xbox360, I would have to disagree, thus far anyways. Granted it does have a wide variety of set them a-blaze, then have them run to the water, at which will be electrified by your 1000 watt shooting hand, but what makes this different from an older game in mind, like Red Faction? Or a newer one like Stranglehold? Yes, I know there is a fine line here (with Red Faction anyhoo), but what’s the big difference? Never being played the same could happen many times, like in Red Faction, instead of finding a Keycard you can shoot through a wall. Or in Stranglehold, instead of shooting the guy in the face, you shoot the air conditioner vent above his head, thus dropping it and successfully crushing his head. Perhaps, just perhaps I just haven’t seen the big picture yet, seeing as how I’ve only sampled the delicious demo (Pay attention, I never said it was a ‘bad’ game). Well, I suppose it hasn’t really been decided to be deemed “Shooter 2.0” yet, not in my book at least. Verdict, coming soon in the form of a good ‘ol review ![]() Till next time, keep on fraggin’! | ||

| I expect that from the demo we have only seen a small fraction of what Bioshock hopes to acheive. FPS 2.0, I'm not so sure. Maybe more of a transitional game than anything, a giant leap (or a big daddy step) in the proper direction. FPS 2.0 I expect will be something more like the newer GTAs (in that there is a lot to do, and so much to do besides the story) mixed with bioshock. I'd like to see no goals. I'd like a VAST landscape. I'd like to see hundreds of NPCs to interact with, talk to. I'd like a non-linear environment, where you can't just hug the right wall and find your path. I'd want it to be like you were the one making the decisions. Take Deus Ex... If you want to keep on working for Majestic 12, you should be able to. If you want to just wander around being a peace keeper, you can do that. If you want to be a thug, well, that is certainly an option. Make a whole world to interact with. You can introduce story through newspapers and television. Think Majectic... disinformation | majestic: the welcome intruders I realise that all of this needs to wait for technology... we need no loading screens, and more immersion than a moniter... something a long the lines of the Net Force crap would work. yes, another ramble from tizakit | ||

No you wouldn't. Think about how much that would actually suck. Plenty of devs have tried it and failed.

| @ Waffles - I don't think that it is possible right now to do it and not be lame and boring, at least at the scope that I'm thinking. We would need total immersion. @ Gzim - Now I gota play STALKER too, I didn't even glance at it. But yes, those last two elder scrolls games are pretty good examples of what I mean. Now just take it out of the fantasy realm. | ||

| Yeah, not to undersell bioshock (I'm probably going to buy it today), but it seems to me like it's more like HL2.5. We still follow a set story with scripted events, collect weapons and EVE is just another word for Ammo. It looks like there are many other ways to use your noodle, which I'm looking forward to, but from the demo it doesn't seem like we have a revolution going on. In fact, as Tizakit hinted, I think the FPS 2.0 has been around for ages. I've never played System Shock 2, but even that seemed a little more out-of-the-mold with its RPG elements. Deus Ex had branching paths and RPG elements. Yadda yadda. That's not to say that the shooter is getting stale either. Even in the demo bioshock has taken storytelling a generation ahead of where we are. Chronicles of Riddick and Condemned made big strides into a more visceral melee game. I think the next big "2.0" looks like Mass Effect. Please come out for PC | ||

Without saying much else, this game does some amazing things with lighting... SPOILER When you first get the shotgun and the lights go out and there is just that one patch of light where you are fighting for your life is a great moment, as well as in the crematorium where you just see the backlit shadow of a doctor splicer, then lights out, and he's gone, great uses of lighting SPOILER EDIT: 'thus far' eh?

| Gzim - I really do love the use of lighting in the game as well .It definitely has had some 'whoa that's kind of creepy' moments. Definitely a game that I probably won't be playing at night (or with school 'officially' starting tomorrow...not a lot anyways). The demo was just a taste...the beginning 'level' of Bioshock is very similar to the demo, but it's slightly different and I've already played it much differently (the areas that are the same) than I did in the demo. Another aspect of the 'do what you want' parts of the game... You can hack a flying turret if you'd like to help you, or not... SPOILER When you get the incinerator plasmid, you can either A) Kill the 3 splicers single handedly and Rambo style w/ a weapon B) Kill them with the 1-2 punch of electro-shot and a whack to the head with the wrench C) Use incinerator for the first time on the gas on the ground and watch them burn (that's what I did)SPOILER The game has had some good moments so far and I've enjoyed it. Especially since I was able to get it for CHEAP from Circuit City (49.99 and purchased with a $50.00 AMEX gift card I got when I left my job). So far so good with it . | ||

| My school starts in like a week or two, so playing the hell out of Bioshock is going to be my farewell to gaming......:weeping: ok, maybe just until I get a hang of the workload... Wow, I'm playing on 360 and I just encountered the first serious slowdown (spoiler) when I shutdown the core to get into ryans office (spoiler) There was a lot of effects and enemies, but passed quickly...in the meanwhile, the story took a turn for the interesting, I've been saving all the little sisters, but I'm wondering what the difference would have been if I didn't... | ||
